Steelband musicians finally receive long overdue payment

New York Carib News

New York, USA - At Last!

It may have taken them almost a year to receive their performance fees and prize money but the Caribbean steelbands have finally been paid the $52,000 owed to them by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association.

The payout was received a few days ago and it has probably paved the way for an end to a long-running drama that had threatened this year’s steelband Panorama at the Brooklyn Museum on September 1st.

“Yes, I can confirm that the outstanding amounts were paid to the respective steelbands by WIADCA,” said Anthony “Ike” Hinds, President of the National Alliance of Steelbands, a major group that represents the interests of the musicians, some of whom are as young as 12 years old.

  • This is not at all impressive. What would have been something to mention would be paying the bands' appearance fees for 2012 NOW, or guaranteeing that the prize monies would be distributed on the night of panorama.

You think Machel had to wait until three weeks before Labor Day to get paid from the previous year?

  •  Where did that money come from all of a sudden.

  • well this is very good to hear.  i'm now somewhat cautiously optimistic that the new management at WIADCA is trying to do the right thing, albeit very late.

will be keeping eyes and ears open for what's gonna happen now with the Brooklyn Panorama....

    .

  • So will participants wait till NEXT year this time to receive winnings from 2012 Panorama? Smh
  • Will CASYM now be able to participate this year?  Will the panorama be held at the Brooklyn Museum?

  • Much appreciated,it seems as though we the members of WST has sent a strong message.
