City nixes bid to nest charter school inside Brooklyn's cherished Meyer Levin building

City school officials have scrapped a controversial proposal to place a charter in a beloved Brooklyn public school building, they said Friday.

The move comes after the Daily News reported that parents and educators opposed the plan.

Back in March, City Education department officials announced their intent to place the lower grades of Kings Collegiate Charter School — run by the Uncommon Schools network — into Meyer Levin School for the Performing Arts in East Flatbush. 

Staffers and families at Meyer Levin told the News that the move would harm existing theater and music programs at their school.

  • This is the THIRD TIME that you have brought up this topic; so I will bite this time. There is a crisis facing BLACK AMERICA and everybody (BLACK LEADERSHIP and BLACK FAMILIES) seem to be blind to it. African Americans are losing LONG ESTABLISHED COMMUNITIES all across AMERICA. And with the loss of communities comes the dispersal and dilution of political  power. I could give many examples but this is not the right pulpit. 

    So when you used the words "for now" you might be more prophetic than you could imagine.
