Pan Trinbago say it’s not their fault... NCC mum on the issue...

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Recently the hottest topic on the When Steel Talks (WST) forum has centered around the lack of payment of the promised stipends to performing steelpan musicians of Trinidad & Tobago months after the official conclusion of the 2013 annual National Panorama and the Trinidad and Tobago carnival season.

The spotlight was beamed upon this unfortunate issue when the young members (kids) of Flamingoes Steel Orchestra from east Trinidad, inquired as to when they would be receiving their stipends after weeks of nightly practice with the orchestra and at least one public performance.

  • People of Trinidad & Tobago ..This year is already shot ...However you should  make preparations for next year ..especially if there is an election before Panorama and demand and end to this type of behaviour and pattern.

    1. If this money is given directly by the government to the Pan players for preliminary round performance ...WHY DOES IT HAVE TO PASS THROUGH NCC?

    2. The preliminary round finishes one month before the panorama final ..... that government money is ear marked for Pan Trinbago months before the Panorama. That money should not be tied up in any other Pan Trinbago or NCC dealings ...that money should be paid immediately after the Preliminary round  ...long before the Panorama Finals.

    3. It is simple ...Like  last Panorama prelims in January 17,18,19 20. Every band  was suppose to hand in their list of performers before the Performance ...Flamingoes did this ...they handed in the list because a Pan Trinbago official requested it right there on the spot. ....By the following weekend they should be having their cheques for that performance. This could be done and should be done ..The majority preliminary round people who are not going forward to the second round should not have to wait till the Finals and worst yet more than two months after the Finals and disgracefully have to literally beg for it ( less than $200,US) ..it is shame full.

I am doing this because those little kids in St John Village ( Flamingoes) can not speak for themselves ...So I have to.

I am already on some people's 'bad black list' .but it does not matter ...I have confidence that one day it will be different when intelligent and sincere people are involved ( I am not condemning everyone at PTB ) but who the cap fits .....

    • Fifty years of panorama and what you have is a gangster paradise. Where is the PM on this?

      bugs

      • Bugs, you knew Raphie? what an awesome pan player he was, he was also my daughter god-father, when he was around there was always laughter. I'm sure where ever he is there is no RIP but a lot ah shit-talk.

    • I agree Salah, your first question is a really good one. But it seems that NCC, being the umbrella body for all the organizations that take part in carnival (the mas, calypso and steelband bodies) is in charge of the funds, the government deals directly with them and they in turn have to distribute to the other organizations. I think it is really unfortunate that players have to wait this long to get their money and sadly this is exactly why alot of the players I know requests their payment directly from the band, sometimes upfront or as soon as they come off the stage so they won't have to wait months for their money. This is just ridiculous.

  • I have a simple answer to this problem and that is, 2014 the day before the panorama all bands, have to call a strike and demand their money before a note is heard.Remember we did it in 1979 and look at the prize money now.

Pantrinbago might pay the bands in 3or 4 month. They don't care about the pan players after carnival,And all pan players

    should know that by now.

  • Why everybody abandon the pan youths? Where is Rudder, Ella, Stalin, Defosto, Crazy. Say something nah.

  • Everyone can claim they love the Pan and sincere about the Pan ... but unless we elect intelligent people to run our affairs we will end up with people who the public will refer to as gangsters ... we need to stop putting our 'friends'  in office . We have intelligent people in Trinidad & Tobago  who because of their intelligence will know that they cannot run SCAM  business. Let the democracy speak

    • Salah, so we get the representation we deserve (elect)???

  • Forgot to mention that Diaz in his procrastination about the money also said that Pablo collected part of the money so part of the players may get pay.
