Teaching Pan to Young Children

I've been trying to find resources, but have come up empty, so I thought I'd turn to you experts!

Does anyone have the best way to start teaching pan to young kids (below 5 years old)? I've seen several examples of lessons, but they are usually geared towards older children.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

  • Thanks for the responses everyone, very helpful!

I wonder if it would be possible to teach a young child their A,B,C's coupled with pan? That is, maybe saying the letter "A" and then playing the corresponding note, say "B" and then play a B note etc...

The idea of writing the notes on the pan is perfect!

  • I have been doing somewhat like Pankiss.  I teach the smaller children nursery rhymes, the birthday song, and the national anthem.  I still hope to get some training to learn new educational methods for small children

  • My son started playing around with my double second when he was three his tenner came just before four so you can start them early.
  • I would let them have a Pair of Mallets (Sticks) with them at all times and everyday they need to Roll on anything, A table, a fence, on a Wall etc for at least 6 mths, then go from there

  • I suggest u write the notes on the pan for starters. That way u gradually introduce them to the concept of notes & written music. Then you may start to teach them simple tunes which are part of their cultural environment.

  • Below five is kinda early.

  • I usually I start with nursery rhymes, everyone playing in unison. Getting to know the notes on the pan, working on rolling techniques and making it fun and engaging for children so young .
  • I am no expert but I think you would show them the same things you teach the older children.
