Is the Era of the Pan Tune Over?

On another front -- a DJ inspired this question.

With Desperadoes winning Panorama 2016 with a popular tune - Different Me - does this signal the return of orchestras picking popular music as their tunes of choice?

  • I agree with the question posed by Jimi Philip,"What is a pan tune?". Let us not forget that some of the most memorable performances in Panorama history came from  "non pan tunes". Remember Scherzando's "I come out to play" from 1974? What about Desperadoes' "Rebecca"  which was the biggest PARTY tune of the year and the eventual Road March winner in 1983. The following year Trinidad All Stars made a huge impact on final night with their rendition of the 1984 Road March, Sparrow's "Doh Back Back". Of  course none of us can forget the immortal "Sailing" sung by the Mighty Trini in 1988, and  arranged by "The Master" Clive Bradley. I hope other bands follow the 2016 Desperadoes and Skiffle steel orchestras and choose current songs that are actually in rotation on the radio. Remenber, once a song has a melody that can be played on an instrument it can be arranged for Panorama.

  • What is a Pan tune ?.

  • I think DIFFERENT ME was an aberration. If the group that produced DIFFERENT ME stays together and stays on the same musical course, they could kill two birds with one stone again. The trend where the STEELBANDS control their own music is going to take stronger and stronger hold as it gives them more time to prepare the song. I am sure that Liam and Boogsie and ALL STARS and Amrit are already working (or strategizing) on their songs for 2017.

If I were a part of the DIFFERENT ME team, I would contact ZANDA and ask him how we could work together to produce another winning song for 2017.

  • IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO WIN IF THE TUNE WILL NOT GET THE AIR PLAY REQUIRED TO MAKE THE MELODY FAMILIAR TO THE MASSES.

PEOPLE MUST BE ABLE TO SINGALONG WITH THE VERSE AND CHORUS.

  • Time alone will tell. Congrats big time to the Radoes and ALL the other bands upon whose shoulders they now stand!
