Lately I am seeing that "old panmen" are the fall guys for all the ills of the steelband. Do you think that this is a correct accessment of the steelband today? How is it possible for such a small group of people to have such power? Being of this group I feel that there is enough blame for everybody and the ole boys are the scapegoats It's good to see old guys still involve with steelbands because they know how it was and how it should not be. The young guys out-number the old guys big time, they are better educated and needed to take this thing to the next level. Now is the time to step-up.

Somehow, I find it more than coincidental that I find this thread, the thread regarding Steel Explosion's attempts to play in Panorama and the thread concerning getting more people to attend band launchings all appear on the same page. Are the topics related? I wonder?
Cecil, watch this young panist from Phase 2 Johann Chuckaree, he is educated, talented and Boogsie take him under his wings, he is one of our bright young stars in the pan world.....
Gavin.
I've watched Johann over the years in Phase2 and is proud of the what he has become.
I kinda enjoy part of this thread, but it got very personal and I had to respect the exchanges/ expressions until they all stopped to take a breath. So may I have your permission to jump in please. Thank you! Personally, I would like to learn about what others are doing for/ with the instrument than what they expect others to do or say. My reasoning is this; tell me what you are currently doing for pan and it may inspire others to become creative also. Tell me if you are making a small ensemble for classics, jazz etc. or if you are developing digital educational content for the alto voice, cello etc.
I believe there is some merit in the original question/ comment that set off this fire storm regarding casting blame on "the old timers", however, if we lose sight of finding corrective measures we'll continue to grope in darkness as musicians. Let's us tell positive stories of success by "old and modern timers" to inspire the genius among us. This post is submitted with an open mind.
Thanks pan people
Mike,
I hope Sidd read your post, so he could tell you about the work he is doing.
Good post Mike!!! This FORUM is all about TALK and zero ACTIVISM!!!
Claude, I enjoy some of your comments, but sometime you come on very negative about this FORUM
Bede: I am only here because CECIL commands me to participate. 10,000 subscribers who supposedly love the pan but only about 20 people who participate regularly. I am just an assistant who is not so emotionally involved as to speak his mind, freely.
I can ENDLESSLY debate PAN FUTILITY with anybody and believe me ... I have the FREE TIME.
Although some people seem to find the topic funny I find it to be a serious matter when the old panmen are made out to be the reason for some of the problems the steelband faces.
Cecil: In this 21st Century dey name a PAN SHOW "Pan In Yuh Pwewfen" (how derogatory is that?) and the desperate OLD TIMERS all over North America listening to that and praising the show as some sort of cutting edge innovation. Not to mention the ECONOMICALLY NON-CONTRIBUTING nature of the demographic because allyuh listening but eh buying nutten in Trinidad. (The show have a right to bus -- Kenny Phillips do the right ting.)
Lord have mercy. Ah better go about meh business and leave this forum alone. But ah like you and Bertel so ah does come back and keep the OLE TALK alive.
