Bede, your observation is well taken, the Medium Bands are becoming a force musically and from a marketing standpoint their choice of selections old school and new have improved the panorama product.
Here's a good example of what you are talking about...between Pan Elders, Joylanders and Buccooneers and the Large Bands.

Bede, I think the arrangers don't listen to all the new music that's available. Music today goes from the studio to the garbage pile, if they make new music compulsory maybe we can salvage some.
I don’t mind the medium bands. My problem with this category is the old tunes. Unlike the Big Bands the Medium Bands seem to gravitate to the older tunes and I am of the opinion this will kill the pan vibe in the future, it is as if they are not willing to try something new or afraid to really go out of the box to accomplish their goal. It might just be me but if you take a look at the bands in winner’s row for the past eight years or so when the older tunes were introduced 2007 and last year 2014 was the only time that I can recall an older tune won.
Sound Specialist of Laventille- Johnny 2007 ( First old tune)
Sound Specialist of Laventille – Hooked 2008
Sforzata – Bandoleros 2009
Steel Xplosion – Radica 2010
Katzenjammers – Wake up 2011
Katzenjammers – This is Bacchanal 2012
Buccooneers – Gold 2013
Pan Elders – Lord Nelson’s Family 2014 ( Last Old Tune)

I am one that never paid much attention to the medium bands, but after taking a look at the line-up this year I suddenly realize that this is where the action is. One of the things I like is how other arrangers most unknown to me has an opportunity to do their thing, know arrangers could get serious cut-ass in this category.

I like hearing the Old Tunes, I can hum or sing along, how many of us will be able to hum or sing along the new tunes and by next year we forget them,

True mate True
Martin, I totally agree with you, I think they should ban the use of old tunes seeing that every year there are so many new good tunes
