The passing of Maestro Paul "Pablo" Campbell

Maestro Paul "Pablo" Campbell pass away on Monday 21th May 2012. He arranged for Cordettes Steel Orchestra from the 60s to 90s, winning the music festival in 1967 un-sponsored category. In 1968 they placed 2nd and placed in the top 3 afterwards. He also arranged for Single Pan Bands like Nostalgic, North Eastern All Stars, Sipabatt to name a few. He tutored Tamana Pioneers from the 1982 until 2011 when he got ill. The first time the band placed in the Panorama competition, they placed 3rd in the Small Band Category and 2nd in the last Music Festival Ensemble Category.

Today at 4:00pm Sponge from Cordette will be on 95.5 fm radio. Tonight from 8:00pm at Cordettes Pan Yard, they are having a musical concert, with bands like the resident band, Tamana Pioneers, Sipabatt to name a few. Tomorrow night at his home in Valencia, Tamana Pioneers will be performing.

The funeral takes place on Monday 28th at the RC church Valencia at 1:00pm. It was my pleasure working with him musically. We built a friendship unforgettable and also taking the Musical Baton he held with Tamana Pioneers Steel Orchestra. We placed 2nd in this year's Small Band Category Panorama prelims, 1st in semis and ran 4th in the final by 1/2 a point due to  a tie for 2nd place. The band is preparing to travel to Scotland from July to August to perform at the festival and we will honour him. From my family and I may his soul R.I.P.

  • Condolences go out to Paul Campbell's family on his passing. I found him to be quite an arranger, and very much a humanitarian. I first took notice of Paul in the 1980's with the Tamana Pioneers at the Steelband Music Festival, and was in admirable awe of his simplicity, his calm demeanour and his unique ability to get the job done. His was a warm heart with an unwavering attitude for helping out when bands were in dire need of assistance, be it for Panorama, or for Music  Festival. He was at ease in either area.

R.I.P. my brother and thanks for the music.

  • Ancestors!

  • My condolences to the Campbell family.

From Noel Mico Skair Pan tutor and arranger World Wide Steel Orchestra.

  • Condolences to his family and all the bands he was associated with , he will always be remembered.

  • I am in Trinidad and want to attend Mr. Campbell's funeral. Can anyone supply directions. Thanks

    • Easy Ian, as Sunday morning, but it may be better to travel with company. Anyway, take transport to Arima, then get a maxi heading Sangre Grande/Valencia route by the Dial in Arima. Ask the driver to take you to the Valencia RC church. Pay a little extra. From there, finding your way back is just a matter of retracing your steps. Or call Pan Trinbago to find out whether a delegation is going to the funeral and hitch a ride. Or check whether anyone from Despers, Mac or Vice or any of those personnel are going. As I recall, he did some work with the band in the 80's/90's.Hope this helps.Peace.

      • Thanks Ed. I did get a call for the directions. You are a man of my heart; I was going to call Pantrinbago this morning before reading your reply. Yes man, we need more thinkers.                                                           Since we have never met I hope to meet you. My number is 316-9483. Thanks again, love peace and pan.

  • He was a very great musical arranger, but as Prospect, Jemmott and the rest of the greats , we all have to go someday. It is a pity that we do not have the musical competitions to nurture new and upcoming arrangers especially in the classical category. Condolences to his family.
