This is 2019 and TECHNOLOGY RULES THE DAY. You don't need to be able to PLAY A PAN to produce high quality PAN MUSIC. And you don't need to hire A PAN MAN and bring him to the studio with his half-tuned PAN and pompous attitude and tardiness and shortage of studio experience to get the FINAL PRODUCT that you are hearing in your head. The product that you would like the world to hear. And it ain't PANORAMA MUSIC, eh ... just for the record.
When a fellow basketball player suggested to TINA CHARLES that her father's story was a good story for a film/documentary -- the idea struck a chord with her and she decided to develop the idea. So being in THE BIG CIRCLES she did the reflexive thing and went to SPIKE LEE (that is what he does -- make movies) and offered him the project.
In turn SPIKE LEE told her: It is YOUR STORY and you have the PASSION for it. You are the best person to do it.
And in her heart that made sense to her. So she went ahead and gathered the resources (even taking a few film classes) and the next thing you know -- two years later -- she is in the TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL standing on YOUR OWN TWO FEET as a producer/director/film-maker ... whatever title she wants to give herself.
Now, cut to the PAN MUSIC -- or lack of QUALITY GLOBAL PAN MUSIC as I always complain.
We have TENS OF THOUSANDS of PAN LOVERS around the GLOBE who live and die for PAN MUSIC. And we all have a common wish (I think): We want to see the music get more GLOBAL RECOGNITION.
So I say: PICK UP YOUR CROSS AND CARRY IT. Of all the thousands of PAN PLAYERS down in TRINIDAD -- nobody eh making no QUALITY GLOBAL PAN MUSIC. They would not know how to, to begin with. And the EXPAT PAN PLAYERS are out here hustling for a dollar with the PAN and they are not going to invest in themselves to go to the studio and attempt to make some GLOBAL PAN MUSIC. Plus they don't understand the concept, anyway. So we have NOTHING COMING in terms of GLOBAL PAN MUSIC.
Not to mention that STEELBANDS from TRINIDAD are not being invited to TOUR GLOBALLY as they once did. And I heard PELHAM GODDARD complain about that in an interview recently -- so I am going with that as the truth. Which makes sense to me.-- but that is a different discussion.
At this point, if we are going to take this music to the world (as Tina Charles showed by example with her film) the responsibility falls on the shoulders of THE EXPAT PAN LOVING COMMUNITY. Ordinary PAN LOVERS with a desire to see the MUSIC GO GLOBAL could begin their own MUSIC PRODUCTION reaching out to the wealth of talented music producers in NORTH AMERICA and EUROPE -- for PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE.
The restrictions of finding a good PAN PLAYER and coordinating to get him to the studio and paying him and dealing with his musical shortcomings have all disappeared. The sound of pan can now be created from a keyboard -- all you need is a TALENTED MUSIC PRODUCER and some good musical ideas and a sincere and passionate desire to produce some global music.
Any ordinary PAN LOVER could break through in this arena, in today's world. So I am encouraging every ambitious PAN LOVER in the GLOBAL PAN COMMUNITY to step up and take a chance. Even better yet, you can join forces with two or three other PAN LOVERS and work on a PAN PLAN. We live in a country where all the tools and talent are at our fingertips.
A good musical idea and some PAN PASSION and some INVESTMENT DOLLARS and your PAN MUSIC PRODUCTION could be hitting the airwaves around THE GLOBE taking PAN to HIGHER HEIGHTS!!!
