THE WAY FORWARD.....

The time his come for our young brilliant minds to form a new pan movement, for too long the movement has been stagnated as leaders live high on the hog. There is a window of opportunity  here that should be taken advantage of.

Ash Wednesday all the large bands should resign from Pan Trinbago and hope all others follow and leave PT with their debt.

  • The trini mindset got to change for things to work. To many years of freeness, and absolutely no production. No production meaning, not a single arranger under the age of 45 can arrange a tune to win the national panorama. To make matters worst, many honestly believe the present pan organization should remain as is.

    • The "Pan is Panorama" mindset has to change. Pan is more than Panorama and there are many young arrangers (under 45) who are very promising.

Why should 90% of the resources allocated to pan go to Panorama? Why not spend some of that on developing young arrangers?

There are music programs at UWI and UTT which could use more funding. These programs could be expanded to include, for example, weekend classes in panyards for young arrangers leading to some type of official certification.

The Pan Trinbago "Old Guard" needs to make room for the technologically-savvy young pan players/arrangers. There are numerous computer programs which could be used to enhance their musical aptitude and arranging skills. With their knowledge and use of computer technology they are also poised to become better equipped in accounting, management, marketing and other skills needed for the modern day steelband. Hopefully, they will learn about integrity along the way.

    • You hear St Margaret's? they are under 45 and I believe they are excelling. I also think that many young people are not made conscious of what's going on really. the way the noise is handled, it is like "big people ting".

      • Thank you Ayesha Mohammed, for responding. I am looking at the level of arranging. I am not hearing anyone today thats good. None of the arrangers today are even close to , let's say Beverly Griffith, Robbie Grennidge, Ray Holman, Boogsie, Earl Rodney,Clive Bradley, Hershel Puckerin, Andy Narell, Bobby Mohammed, Professor Philmore, Pelham Goddard, Leon Smooth Edwards, Anthony Williams, etc I did left out a few others. Oh Carlton Zanda.

If Trinidad is the land of pan, we should have many young arrangers today to give the guys I mention(active today) 'a run for their money' in any panorama competition. We don't. Period. Not even close. The young arrangers can play well, even play tunes blindfolded, but are not artistic in arranging a winning panorama tune.

        • If Trinidad is the "LAND OF PAN" we should have at least 10 PAN PLAYERS from TRINIDAD touring and AMBASSADORING the world showcasing the PAN like dem YANKEE PLAYERS doing -- YOUNG OR OLD!!!

          • Claude Gonzales, solving  crime is first in trini!! I am sure many can do, but need to get home before it gets dark, or else, yuh gonna trust ph drivers to take you home. Hence the reason YANKEE PLAYERS do have that extra hours time on their hands to do their networking, practicing and  finally showcasing their talents.

            • Patrick: You and me and Evan Lobo have so much in common thought when it comes to the discussions on this forum that I usually stay away from your postings out of respect. They have warned me that this is a  PAN FORUM and not a POLITICAL FORUM. And being a creature of politics that is a hard discipline for me at times.

So I cannot get into the CRIME discussion on this forum. But I am sure that I can write a 300 page paper on CRIME IN TRINIDAD starting in the NINETEEN SIXTIES to the crisis today.

All I will say is that THIS GOVERNMENT has ZERO INTEREST in solving crime in TRINIDAD and TOBAGO.

        • patrick, yuh use ah broad brush to make yuh point about young arrangers, Duvone young, Andre White young, Odie young, Mark young. Kendell young,  Amrit young, Codrnigton young,  Headly young, Shenelle young and I'm sure there's more, the thing is, it is difficult for a young arranger to arrange for a large band this is the reason we don't see them.

          • Cecil, I want the young arrangers to prove me wrong, it will only strengthen the competition. I don't believe we should praise them with mediocrity. A good winning arrangement honestly has anything to do with size of band. Your theory simply implies all large band arrangements is superior to all the other smaller bands.

            • patrick all attention is given to the Large Bands, lets pay some attention to other the categorys this year. I am already hearing some nice arrangements in the single bands. Believe me there is no shortage of young arrangers, just a lack of opportunity.
