Allendale LINC students Adan Ocampl (left), 16, and Dyani McKinney, 17, beat on their drums with instructor Matt Potts (center) as they find their rhythm, warming up for a steelpan drum class at Culture, Arts, & Music on April 10 in Woodstock.

The students from Allendale therapeutic day school in Woodstock were on a walk one day when they heard some cool sounds coming from one of their neighbors.

They went to check it out and happened upon the Culture, Arts and Music studio at 1039 Wanda Lane. They knocked on the doors and inside they found sounds of the Caribbean coming from steelpan drums at the studio.

The students were drawn to the sounds and the fun of banging on drums, and the instructors were thrilled with their interest. Soon, a partnership was born.

“They are our neighbors and we didn’t know they were there until they heard the drums, and they didn’t know we were there,” Allendale Principal Lorine Schaar said.
