National Workers Union

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Not satisfied with selling out state enterprises and privatizing the economy with PPP policies, the ruling elite is going after the steel pan movement to kill it by introducing a pool party (more Ps) in the Panorama.

This amounts to total disrespect to the pan fraternity. This pool party concept has nothing to do with raising revenue but to kill the festival by appealing to a segment of a degenerate middle class who hate pan. They only love pan around Panorama time and would not invite the pan fraternity to play in their exclusive fetes and in their carnival bands. Their concern is to drink cases of rum, whiskey and vodka on that day and profile their nakedness, debauchery, and licentiousness.

....It is another attempt of the agents of capital to suppress the working class...The working class has shaped the culture of the nation. It is we who developed the steel pan.

  • Who they ? The people who want to have a good time? Isn't carnival nakedness, debauchery and licentiousness? Ban panorama to keep away the degenerate middle class? Ban carnival to keep away the degenerate middle class? Skip the politics.

    • and badjohns too! That is how it was, it's time to grow up.

  • Not sure if the post was expressing moral indignation at lewd behaviour or at political indignation at the PPP, but ...in case there are any moralists out there who base their indignation on the lewdness of the pool party, please read up on the history and evolution of the carnival concept and practice!   Role reversal, and lewdness in particular,  ARE in fact the central definition of carnival.  I recommend reading Carnival: Myth and Cult by Alexander Orloff, the Austrian photojournalist.  The book may now be out of print but is still available through Amazon).

    • They only LOOK BACK when it is convenient.

    • You're missing the point bruv

      • Mr. Corbin:

        WHAT POINT?!!I

First, I qualified my statement by saying I wasn't sure if the point was one about moral indignation.  Then I proceeded to recap what has been studied and thoroughly documented regarding the 6000-year history of carnival [which, by the way, means "farewell to flesh"]: that conceptually it is precisely the debauchery and role reversal aspects that make it carnival.   Obviously I have misunderstood your response, so please elaborate.  What IS the point I'm missing?

  • The BIG PICTURE is starting to to take shape,  we shall know the truth and it will make us free.

  • True! Well said. It is the same group who is trying to ruin Calypso and replace it with 'hands in the air'; reduce Carnival to 'a party' and see pan as some exotic instrument to roll out once a year and eventually replace it with sound-systems. The cultural heritage of T& T means nothing to them. They could party in Rio, London, New York, Montreal or T&T, and couldn't tell the difference; it's just a party and a chance to make money then hide behind the notion of 'youth' and say everyone else is old-fashioned. Really sad! The Ministry of Culture must step in or we lovers of T&T will have to act.

    • Who is the same "group" trying to ruin calypso? We, the people are doing a very good job of ruining everything by shoving politix into everything. Politix?, yeah politics.

  • Ain.t nutten new.
