This is one of my MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS in CALYPSO -- and I do HAVE MANY.
In 1963 I was going to school at BISHOPS in TOBAGO (and Jeremy will come and tell me that ah lie) -- but I will still tell my story ... much like JOHN AGITATION bringing you TRUE LIFE SENSATIONS for your MENTAL RELAXATION ... allyuh get the joke.
So Kitchener had just come back from ENGLAND and it was the CALYPSO SEASON and THE PNM GOVERNMENT sent the CALYPSONIANS to TOBAGO to do a FREE SHOW.
For whatever reason, the BISHOPS CLASS was allowed to go see the show down in SHAW PARK and i was a part of the experience.
Well the CALYPSONIANS came on and they sang and they sang and there was the USUAL AMOUNT OF SMUT. But at some point in the show, KITCHENER came on and sang THE ROAD. (I think that was his 1963 SONG.) And after all the PREVIOUS SMUT and WINING by the SINGERS the song did not just quite GO OVER WITH THE AUDIENCE .. and he knew it.
So KITCHENER stood on that stage and said: I can sing SMUT TOO -- yuh know!!! (I can't remember his exact words. But they were CLOSE TO THAT!!!)
And so THE BAND STARTED TO PLAY and this is the song that KITCHENER SANG. Ah tell yuh, as a YOUNG CALYPSO LOVER ... I just about went CRAZY (and not just me, eh ... but the whole CROWD just about WENT CRAZY).
I will never forget that CALYPSO EXPERIENCE when THE LORD KITCHENER came on that stage in SHAW PARK in 1963 and SANG THIS SONG ...
