Too much music?

I don't think that there is another country that produce as much music as Trinidad every year. But every year most of that music die after 3 or 4 months, we produce the most music but we also discard the most music. In a Guardian article Leston Paul said, and I quote "TNT is too small to accommodate a barrage of artistes. There are too many artistes for disc jockeys to play for a two month period." What do you think?.

  • There is a reason why we have been oft characterized as "Mimic Men"...  No diff with the music...  Whatever exists "out there" outside our shores is fair game to be copied in the zeal to "out do dem"...  The cosmopolitan effect def influences what we produce...  good or bad...

    • Everyone has something good to say,My say is that at present their is a handful of artiste out there making money if i was the an artiste my aim is to be recognize it may not happen this year or even next year but I'll try and stay in there maybe my time may come and i to can make money.I Commend Bunji and Fay-Ann for stepping down artiste like Iwer,Machel and shurwayne should follow.I would never go to one of there shows they don't need my money.Does anyone realize at present Machel has over 10 songs out there an is expecting to release a double CD for his 30 anniversary' I'm very happy for him but come on.

      • Wayne there is an old saying that "you can't keep a good man down" the same applies to good music it will always rise to the top.

        • Very true.

We live in a throwaway society, and that has permeated through all of its music. Are the radio stations to blame? Are the artistes to blame? No one can say for sure but as a nation we take style and fashion to extreme. Only when one leaves T & T does one appreciate the past, the history, and the talent.

Day after day one is subjected to a world of talentless people who are lorded by their peers (especially in England) and held aloft by these b class realty shows that’s when it suddenly dawns on us, you know we have created so much and yet!

    • I hear you Randi.

    • let's face it, of the hundreds of tunes wriiten in the season, how many are really worth saving? when the double entendre of a Spoiler is replaced with a lyric like 'eat meh cake', the term artform gets to be too all-inclusive. we don't keep carnival costumes; some of the music got to go, too.

  • I agree with Leston Paul, and the others in the discussion, very valid points. but what do we do,limit the amount of artistes in the different genres. what about the producers/arrangers, are they capable of doing so much quality work in such a short time slot? years ago the studios would weed out the good from the not so good and the  Quality ones would have a longer air play and finally get paid for their efforts and make a living in the industry. for years there has been discussions about music for the international community but that has fallen on deaf ears. but today anything goes. There is so much more to this discussion. I'M JUST SAYING.

  • Most of the songs that are made in T&T are targeted to the local audience.  The lyrics tell the story and story is in the lyrics.  That is not say that others around the world don't understand and enjoy the music.  Because they do more now than ever before.  The good news is that because we have such a rich base our talent that we will continue to get great music.  The better news is that the interest in the music is now lasting 3 to 4 months.  In the old days it was done the day after carnival with Lent being a factor.  The best news is that our talented pool of artists would eventually find a way to make our interest last from Carnival to Carnival. Let's start focusing on that.  I have a few ideas, but l will wait for the discussion to begin before I throw in my 2 cents.

    • Brian my friend the discussion has begun, your 2 cents is'nt worth anything if you keep it for yourself, put it out there and maybe you could get a good return on it. It will be worthwhile if local artistes target an international audience because not much CDs are sold in T&T and it's just good business to target the larger audience. I don't agree with what you said about Lent being a factor. In the "old days" songs survived inspite of Lent.
