  • The story line is a bit distorted. But a TOUCHDOWN is a TOUCHDOWN even if it bounced off the star receiver's hand (Manu Chao's) and fell into the hands of the offensive lineman.

CALYPSO ROSE, the undisputed queen of calypso, received a “gold” record in France for her Far From Home album. The award was presented on French National TV on September 13 during the C’est A Vous prime time show on FR 2, with a second presentation taking place later that evening during a show at the La Cigale concert Hall in Paris where she performed.

The feat came about after Far From Home, released in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Switzerland some months ago, sold 50,000 copies in France, going gold in the process. From all appearances the album is on course to go platinum sometime in mid November with some 100,000 copies expected to be sold.

Through her world manager, Jean Michel Gibert, Rose (Mc- Cartha Linda Sandy Lewis) conveyed to Newsday last Tuesday: “I am happy to know the efforts I have done in my career has paid off now that I have received the gold record from a major label in France called ‘Because’. This is what I wanted to achieve all my life in my career. Gold record over 70,000 sold from May until now, heading to receive platinum by the end of November in France.” A posting on Rose’s Facebook page on September 15, at 3.29 pm read: “I couldn’t post it earlier but now it’s official so here’s the video (see below) of me receiving the prize for Far From Home going gold in France! Thank you!” Gibert said: “When she was presented with the award on television she was so surprised.

It is the first international gold album given to an artiste coming from Trinidad and Tobago.

TT has had gold singles before but this is the first gold album from a local.” Rose’s Far From Home al bum was co-produced by international star Manu Chao and who was featured on three of the tracks.
