TWO SIDES OF THE "GREENS" COIN(S)

While EXPATS are sitting around the world grousing about the GREENS, here is what some dedicated and well-placed locals have to say about the Panorama appendage.

The T&T Guardian sought the views from some stakeholders in the Panorama Competition concerning the Greens. Here are their comments.

Communications manager at the Unit Trust Corporation (UTC) Rory Rostant: “We see the Greens as an opportunity for staff engagement and to be part of an event that has become an integral part of the Carnival calendar. Not only do we celebrate our national instrument, but the Greens allows the Unit Trust to showcase our brand in a festive atmosphere. UTC is as much a part of the financial landscape as Panorama is to Carnival.”

Television personality Alvin Daniell has been doing commentary on Panorama for many years. “As far as I know there has never been any negative feedback about the Greens interrupting the broadcast. From a personal point of view, it has never affected my commentary, and I have never heard any other commentator complaining. In my view, Pan Trinbago has many more important issues to deal with than the Greens.”

Founder/manager of popular south steel orchestra NLCB Fonclaire Milton “Wire” Austin: “As a steelbandsman, I see the Greens as a good financial venture for Pan Trinbago, and I hope the organisation does everything to make it better every year. There was some concern about the noise coming from there in the first year. But that was contained successfully in the following year.

“As a matter of fact, this year the sound system is designed to be cut every time a band begins its performance on stage. I am glad the idea was started. The Greens will always be there, allowing Panorama to provide entertainment for everybody. In any event, it is the steelbands that will benefit financially from the venture.”

  • So last Sunday 16th February 2014, at the National Panorama semi finals for medium and large steelbands held at the "Big Yard" Queens Park Savannah, by 3:00pm, The North Stand was full to capacity, The Grand Stand was full to capacity, The Drag was overflowing as usual, and The Greens complete with the pool was up and running. Therefore from all reports I'm saying that, The haunt of traditional pan lovers who come to de Savannah to pay (notwithstanding all de complimentary tickets given to officials, friends and family) to listen pan music The Grand Stand, The traditional Panorama hangout of the bacchanal crews The North Stand, and the territory of traditional pan lovers who come to de Savannah to listen pan music, but doh pay (because de grand stand cyar hole everybody) The Drag, was well patronized. From my view point, on de other side ah de world, if the personal issues persons may have with The Pantrinbago Executive, and probably with personalities too are removed from the equation, The Greens, and The Pool took nothing away from the actual show as I know it. Change is never readily accepted, and it is has been the reaction of human nature to resist change through the centuries. The real issue that requires attention really seems to be the rhythm sections in The North Stand that cannot be efficient and effectively regulated. Food for thought. Peace.

    • Both Sandra and Russell flipped the coin and like it came up HEADS ... as in Diaz having a brilliant head. Not only that, Diaz in garnering praise and accolades from many respectable sources on the GREENS innovation.

THE VISIONARIES are dead!!! LONG LIVE DIAZ!!!

      • Not so Claude... Ya boy Diaz sound like he was about to get a heart attack on the radio yesterday. He ran for cover. And those are not my words but those of the people interviewing him.  I hope you have plenty aspirin and Alka Seltzer for him. He will thank you really as he sings "plop plop fiz fiz oh what a relief it is"

  • I simply say...everyone can't/won't be pleased, and I am a pannist. Can you imagine many Panorama-playing-pannists actually head to 'The Greens' after performing to join their friends/colleagues/families? And that speaks volumes!

  • If you listen to online internet radio, they have their compressors and limiters on the DJ's mics, so as you enjoy the song, and the DJ chimes in, all a sudden the music chops out... if they can make internet radio do that, they should get the web page to set up the equipment to silence the greens system when a sound enters the stage mic.

  • How long we wait for the noise to stop? One second! One minute!  Let's hope the tech really cuts! NO to the Greens!

  • Serrette said, “We have detractors but The Greens is one of four spaces in Panorama, there is still the North Stand, the Grand Stand and the Drag.
“The fact that people are coming to The Greens shows that we are doing something good, people come for entertainment.”

Contacted for comment yesterday, event co-ordinator of the Pan Splash Michelle George said:
“We have been getting a lot of interest and a lot of scepticism as well, but the whole idea behind it is for re-education of the young people and rethinking the art of entertainment, in regard to the national instrument. We believe that young people need to integrate and be taught how to appreciate the pan, and the point of going on The Greens was for the pan, so it’s not a concept that means to take away from the pan because we are making sure we do not interrupt the pan at all, and once a band is on-stage, the Jumbotron goes up and all other music in the area is ceased, so all the Pan Splash patrons will be able to see and hear the steelbands as they perform and compete".

    • The people that make the big dollars off everything carnival don't care about CULTURE.

  • Bugs: well said, I always say bring back the olddays and we won't have this problem, that's the only tim pan had respect.
  • Thanks for the comic relief Claude. Are you trying to bring honor to thugs, bullies and thieves?

To (UTC) Rory Rostant - I say are you serious. You should be flogged for saying that in public...

To Alvin Daniell - I say you know that is not true. You are now suspect. Just ask Renegades the victim of such behaivor and Kes the victimizer of pan people with such disrespectful behavior.

To Milton “Wire” Austin - you've come a long way since Pan by Storm maybe you think you will win this year.

On a much more serious note, Pantrinbago has yet to pay the Festival 2013 Prize monies.
