When Steel Talks

Everything Related to the Steelpan Instrument and Music

We now have an integrated list of “PASSED STEELBANDS” which we can officially hand over to the NEW VISIONARIES for honing and further research and development. This is just a starting point and there is still considerable work left to be done. The WST FORUMITES responded to the call and contributed around 245 steelbands. This list is a combination of the records provided by Jeremy de Barry and the NEW VISIONARIES and the WST members. After duplicates were removed we ended up with about 400 PASSED STEELBANDS.

We wish the NEW VISIONARIES swift success as they attempt to develop and complete this historical document. There are about 93 bands that are yet to have the “LOCATION” field filled in and that should be the first priority.

In looking at the data we know that the PAN was developed in GREATER PORT-OF-SPAIN so we expected the largest number of bands to be from THE CITY. But San Fernando and Tobago gave the Port-of-Spain PAN MEN a run for their money. San Fernando came in with 35 bands and Tobago came in with a shockingly high 29 BANDS. Port-of-Spain came in first with 38 bands but that did not include GREATER PORT-OF-SPAIN. For example, St. James came in with 27 bands and Woodbrook came in with 4 bands. But San Fernando and Tobago like PLENTY PAN – CLEARLY!!!

St James and Belmont might well be considered the HEARTS OF CITY PAN.  St. James now leads with 33 BANDS and Belmont follows with 18 bands.

With 22 bands ARIMA cannot  be left out as a major contributor to the evolution; and with 14 bands SAN JUAN deserves a special mention.

These totals are subject to MAJOR CHANGE once the 93 "TBD" bands get their rightful city or town designation.

It is left to the NEW VISIONARIES in terms of how they choose to organize the groupings.

Thanks to all the contributors!!! And we hope that in a few months time the NEW VISIONARIES can come back to the FORUM with a “QUALITY LIST” to be placed in the archives of the WST FORUM.

[As a lover of CALYPSO it would be nice to see a CALYPSONIAN take this list and compose a nice "TRIBUTE TO STEELBANDS OF THE PAST" calypso.]

Claude: I've told you my interest lies in the STEELBANDS of the present, we spend too much time talking about the history at the expense of the present.

The steelband in the Mecca needs attention today.

The New Visionaries Pan Foundation would like to thank all those on WST who contributed to this project – “THE STEELBANDS WHICH HAVE PASSED.”

We would especially like to thank Mr Claude Gonzales for the professional manner in which he pursued and organized his list of defunct steelbands. Thanks Claude, you are a winner!

Mr Jeremy de Barry, GREAT GREAT work! Your listing is priceless! Keep doing what you are doing for Pan. This project must not be the world’s best kept secret. Keep the light shining and expose your work documenting our National Instrument to the world.

Finally, we at the Foundation are aware that there are as many steelbands in Trinidad and Tobago still to be discovered and documented. This listing is far from complete and our project is ongoing. It is extremely important to the steelband movement that this historical document be completed and archived as the original foundation of Pan as we know it today.

I remember a band called Tromboli from Belmont in the early fifties. Any body else?

Lawford: I was given a band named "STROMBOLI" (from Belmont) so we might be talking about the same band. These are some of the little issues that the NEW VISIONARIES have to check out with spelling and stuff like that.

Stromboli was a band from Erthig Rd. in Belmont

Thanks Desmond! I will put in the Street (Road) for Stromboli.

I was going through my files and found some bands around from the beginning.   They are included in Anthony Williams's unpublished "History of the Steel Band".  If they are already included then simply ignore them, if not then add them.

St. James bands, with the exception of Cairo, which could have been from Bellevue.  This is to be confirmed.

Sun Valley (formed 1946), Cross Roads (1948), Cairo (1946), Star Nicks (1961), Wonder Harps, previously Samba Boys (1959).

No dates when they were started were given for this next group, who were extinct by 1962.

Ship Mates, Corvette, Green Hell, Nob Hill, Black Rose, Young Sun-Vallians, Western Symphony (Cocorite) and St. James Syncopators.

Hope this will help.  Good luck with the project.

Thanks Robert! I will cross check and add your new bands! The NEW VISIONARIES have their hands full.

Mr. Saldenha: You just pushed ST. JAMES into the lead with 27 bands!!! Belmont supporters better step up and add some more bands to keep pace.

Claude, Brunton Road, not Brunton Street, lol

Small Town from PT. Cumana  and  Valentino from ????,

Mr Gonzales; I told U from the beginning that St James alone derived 42 bands, I gave U several bands especially one from Cocorite named "Pan Pioneers" from Harding Place Cocorite, also I gave U "Belle stars" from Brieves Road that Band evolve from "Cairo", I also gave U.Drum Phonics and Modern Sounds, theres a band from Cocorite Ft George area named Ft George Syncopators, but some how U chose not to pay attention, there's lot more but I'll stop for know...
