Information on the Steelbands
World Steelband (aka NIU Steelband)
Course: MUSE 372/672
Meeting time: Monday to Thursday, 1-1:50pm
• This ensemble is primarily for students that have steelpan playing experience
• If you have minimal or no steelpan playing experience but are willing to dedicate
yourself to learning the instrument and repertoire, we would be open to having you in the
ensemble
• Must commit to being in the ensemble for one year
• Some on and off campus performances in Fall and a number of performances in Spring
All University Steelband
Course: MUSE 373/673
Meeting time: Tuesday & Thursday, 4:30-5:20pm
• This ensemble is for beginning students and/or students with minimal steelpan playing
experience
• Students do NOT have to commit to being in the ensemble for one year, though a yearlong commitment would be appreciated
• At least one on campus performance each semester
NIU Community School of the Arts Steelband (CSA Steelband)
Learn to play the steelpan with Yuko Asada, director.
Open to ages 12 - adult. No prior experience necessary. The first rehearsal is open to everyone to
try it out! The class meets on Mondays from 6:30 - 7:25pm during the fall and spring
