How does a steelpan artist go about covering a song performed by a previous artist? For example I want to record a song that was composed by John A. Doe; do I contact John A. Doe directly, seeking his permission? Do I contact his record label? or his agency? Or should I all together just not bother to do the John A. Doe song? I know that the Harry Fox agency takes care of this aspect for those artists/songwriters registered through them and there are a few other similar organizations. Likewise, is there a similar "body" for Steel pan music? How would a steel pan artist make such a request? How would a steel pan composer collect royalties on music he composed?

  • Depends what country you are in. If you are recording it for release you have to contact your national copyright organisation - here in the UK it is the PRS/MCPS. They will give you all the correct forms etc. If you want to collect royalties on a song you have written you need to be a member of a copyright collection agency. It is very complicated, but I have found that if you ring them they are very helpful. hope this helps
