WHAT SAY YE?

It is MY opinion that from now onward any leader representing Pan People and the Pan should possess a university degree. The time has come for us to want more, no disrespect to anyone.

  • It bothers me that so many think that all that's needed to run a successful steelband organization is the knowledge of pan, one person said proper knowledge of all the pans with years of experience is worth more than a PHD.

I was reminded of how many people with university degrees are fools and crooks, few saw this as something positive. This made me wonder if this mindset is the reason the once mighty steelband has been reduced to a fraction of it's former self.

There are a lot of university educated young people playing pan today, no doubt some might want to give back to the fraturnity let us not be jealous or intimidated  by their education, they are what is called today an "upgrade"  Nothing is wrong with raising the bar.

    • Cecil, 'nothing is wrong with raising the bar', as long as we don't shut the gate at the same time.

      • Lillian, I choose to remain positive, if negative arises, I deal with it.

  • Lets hope the degree is not the only qualification.

There are a lot of jackarses out there with degrees.

There are many skills associated with running a people centered institution, but in this day and age a degree is usually counted as one of them.

It doesn't matter what your degree is in.

Companies like Apple etc hire people with any degree to any position and then train them to be what they want them to be. Usually by the time they get into positions of power or decision making they would have gone through a rigorous training experience both theoretically and practically through exposure to the job experience.

The degree signifies a certain intellectual development and exposure to academia that is common across all disciplines.

It ensures that the person selected it 'trainable'. Promotion to high office is usually from within, from those that have worked through the system or across from the same level of personnel from a different or related company, that would have gone through the same path, though in a different environment.

That is not to say that the school of life and experience does not teach one a thing or two, but there is no way to quantify such education. The degree indicates that someone has passed a certain level of intellectual stimulation, learning how to think and analyze etc. It's really a starting point.
At least that's what real degrees signify.

Today the ease with which one can get a degree seems to make it less significant.

    • Thank you Wayne.

  • I assume that the University Degree that Cecil Hinkson is talking about is a "business administration degree" and not a Degree in Music,

    • As we look at the steelband in the Mecca today we see a relatively short life-span, we never fully understood how to make it work, that's because most of it's leaders were self serving, they never made a long term plan, so today we are left with a remnant of something that could have been.

From the late 50s to now much tax dollars went into the steelband movement, can Trini people be proud of the use of their money?

We are where we are today because we never saw the need to involve those who studied Business, Finance.the Arts, Sociology, Engineering, this is how you plan for the long term.

      • Cecil: Compare PAN  in Trinidad today to the sixties and seventies that this forum is tabancaing for and tell me about the "short life-span" yuh talking bout.

PAN in Trinidad today is at its HIGHEST HEIGHTS.  That is where we are today!!!

Pan makers cannot even meet the EXPORT DEMAND. So much steelbands around they cannot even find enough players to play for the nearly 200 bands. UWI, HIGH SCHOOLS, NGOs, PAN MUSIC STUDENTS all over the world, scientists, documentation projects, music professors -- ALL working night and day to MOVE PAN FORWARD.

All the principals described in your last sentence are busily involved (hands-on) moving PAN FORWARD.

Your favorite horse -- PAN ON THE ROAD ON THE GROUND FOR CARNIVAL -- is dead. But everything else PAN is COMING UP ROSES!!!!

        Stevie Wonder could see that!!!

        • I am not talking about Pan Bro.

The Steelband in the Mecca is my concern.

      • This is where the training and development should START...plant the seeds to bigger thinking.
