Who are the real Education Officers of Pan Trinbago?. Part 3#
By Aquil Arrindell
We must understand what is meant by the term education. Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.(Wikipedia). If any of my UWI lecturers knew I quoted wiki, they would kill me, LOL, but the definition is, to
me, extremely appropriate. The origin of these words are I lead forth, I take out; I raise up, I erect. And to my understanding, education means, in its true sense, to lead out of. You, as the educator, have to lead that knowledge, which is already in that person’s DNA, which is already in their destiny to become who or what they were put here to become, out of them. It is also important to understand your students’ learning style, (cognitive, kinesthetic, visual, auditory, etc.) and adapt your lesson to suit their needs. Therefore one’s responsibility as an educator is to facilitate learning. Most importantly, I measure if what is being taught is being learnt. This was my major issue with Pan Trinbago.
This year, the ERO, in the south central region, said he had set up a seminar for south band leaders. Good! Did anyone learn anything? Yes! Because they said so. Well, my students say yes all the time until term test results. The information you disseminate in the seminar, is it being used in their pan yards? How are we assessing the money spent to do seminars or workshops in terms of value to the information actually being used? We have been holding workshops for decades and very little has changed in the steel pan fraternity. Then, what should we do?
We have to reach beyond the titles and the positions and the egos. Education Officer, Public Relations Officer, these titles are temporary. In my profession, there are teachers in it for the money and there are those in it because that is their passion, their calling, what God put them on earth to do. I was Pan Trinbago’s Education Officer before and after I got the title because I was educating pannists before and after I got into office. Permit me to name some others: Franka Hills, Vanessa Headly, Carlon Harewood, Akinola Sennon, Shaun Ramsey, Curt Robinson, Jeff Klein, Martin Albino, Kevin Mc Leod, Kameer Brown, Taynior Heart, Jhovan Samuel, Barry Mannette. etc. Please forgive me if you were not mentioned (or your name was misspelled). WE ARE ALL education officers of Pan Trinbago. We educate our members without pay on a daily basis, year in, year out. Pan Trinbago, the officer representing the parent body needs to find all our education officers, discover what their needs and challenges are and assist them so they can better deliver that definition of education we started with. Education is the process of facilitating learning.
I rest my case.
Yours truly,
Aquil (Education Officer) Arrindell
