  • I could write a whole chapter on this excellent Dalton Narine production, but I won't bother.

    Anyone who cares anything about the steelband has an obligation to see it for themselves.

    I'll just make a few comments.

    In the mid sixties, double tenors and high tenors suddenly appeared in every steelband in the land.

    It was not written or broadcast anywhere, but we all knew that the genius of Bertie Marshall was responsible.

    The impact of the j'ouvert bomb "Let ever valley be exalted" was so powerful it was felt even by us who weren't there.

    And yes, they did call Hylander's music "Chiney music"

    And lastly, Hylanders Steel Orchestra was the biggest casualty of the "bad john" era of the steelband.
