I always remember Solo being drilled by Reneud at their yard at Morvant junction when ever I hear Bongo. They were very disciplined, serious music from the east, a class by themselves.
I remember those thirty five tenors and the big band that was Solo Harmonites in those days.
I remember Solo going down the drag in the preliminaries and taking half the savanna with them.
In those days the prelims was the best part of panorama, when big bands like Despers, Cavaliers, Renegades , Harmonites, All Stars and others went down the drag in full force, playing their panorama tune on the move.
Back then you were able to fully appreciate the power of pan.
I was fortunate to be one of the thirty-five members of the tenor section that played the arrangement of Saturday-night arranged by ''Earl Rodney! in 1970!
One of the finest arrangements in Panorama history. The perfect blend of pan and rhythm. Earl Rodney was at his scintilatting best! I was one of the doubters. He surely proved me wrong. Hats off to Rodney and Solo Harmonites! Those were the days when Harmonites played with over thiry five tenors.
I've always loved this oldie by the legend, The Mighty Sparrow. After listening to this, listen to Earl Rodney's arrangement for Solo Harmonites and see how he did justice to this fine calypso.
