I quite agree about Carnival in your country. Didn't know pans were not allowed on the Carnival? On the other hand you have a lot of pan players and pans. And of course the biggest pan community in the world.
If you read my former posts, maybe you can understand what I was trying to do. But in short it comes to this.
There are hardly any instruments on São Vicente. They simply can't afford them! By introducing pan during Carnival I was hoping to reach as much people as possible. Just to show them you can make instruments out of old barrels. And also helping the dance groups to stay in rhythm.
I can't see what is wrong with helping them in a musical way.
They are happy I showed it and want to learn how to make their own. But until then it would be nice if they can start practicing. I'm quite sure you have a hart for Pan, so why deny them to have the same experience?
Deh arksing fuh pan fuh dere carnival! When we rejecking pan in ours!Is this the beginning of the end? Will they develop their own steelbands and find ways of incorporating them into their mas?
Will the time come when, if I want to see real Carnival I will not be in T& T, but somewhere else?
God forbid!
Please let us rescue our Carnival by finding ways of reincorporating pan into its mainstream!
Only 5 pans and 3 people who had never seen or heard a pan, we formed the first steelband on São Vicente, Cape Verde Islands, during the carnival 2015.
Who is going to help them with a few extra pans, so they can start their own steelband?
