Desperadoes scintillating performance of Baron's calypso "Somebody" placed fourth on Finals night in Panorama 1989.A classic Despers jam, this tune was arranged by Robbie Greenidge.(Beverly Griffith's inclusion in the title credits is an error. Though Beverly and Robbie have collaborated on Panorama arrangements for Despers, this was not the case here)

  • This is really some great work by Robbie Greenidge. An outstanding arrangement of a classic calypso tune.

This performance earned fourth place in the finals.

I've come to believe that panorama judging tells us little about the quality of an arrangement, or of the band, for that matter.

The Panorama Final results are just the judges take on one performance of a band on one night, a night on which many things could influence that performance.

  • Really refreshing as a diehard fan and pan lover.I didn't know until...

    Let's go radoes!!!

  • hello all,

This is a very good arrangement of Somebody by Desperadoes.Hard to believe that

this arrangement came 4th, but then, that's competition.

  • Thanks Glenroy, but I just noticed that I wrote "SECONDS" that should have been thirds. The arrangers whose works were 2nds in that time frame are Len Sharpe, Jit Samarro and Clive Bradley. Sorry for my error and apologies to all the historians.

                                                       Sincerely,

  • Like you, Ian I like to deal in facts
I try to educate and not spread misinformation.

And besides, I love this arrangement
  • Thanks Glenroy for the clarification of who arranged Baron's "Somebody"

This is some trivia for you pan buffs.  Beverly and Robert's collaboration was a success, since they won once and had 2 seconds from 1985 through 1988.

In 1989, Robert was all alone at the helm, his second solo attempt since 1981. Bradley was doing a course in NY, so he was not available to arrange in 1981. This was the third out of the four times, that Desperadoes were beaten by another Steel Orchestra performing the same tune. (1964 "Mama Dis Is Mas" North Stars)

(1986 "The Hammer" All Stars). (1989) "Somebody" Renegades and in 2003 Phase II's "Music in Meh Blood '
