From their 1964 album "Calypsoes and classics". Hylanders was one of the most unique steelbands ever, and were a perennial favorite in the J'ouvert bomb competition.Their leader, Bertie Marshall was one of the men most responsible for the technological advancements that the steelband made in the 1960's.Their patented sound featured ringing high tenors and powerful, low bass.Apart from their innovative high tenors and double tenors, they created quite a stir when they featured an amplified tenor pan. Here they are with Haydn's "Gypsy Rondo"R.I.P Bertie Marshall, Godfather of the J'ouvert Morning Bomb Tune!

This morning I woke up humming this tune and it started me thinking.
"Gypsy Rondo" by Hylanders is a classic "Bomb Tune: from the nineteen sixties.
Nowadays, almost any pop tune played on pan at J'ouvert is called a "Bomb tune"
Not so back then.
In those days to be a "Bomb Tune", the tune had to Explode!
It had to be special.
Something tune not expected to be heard on pan at calypso tempo on J'ouvert morning.
It would the talk of the Town for days.
Talk would be like
"Allyuh hear Hylanders J'ouvert Morning? Dey drop a real BOMB on dem"
"Let Every Valley be exalted", "Elizabethan Serenade", "Tzina Tzina" (by Cavaliers)"Poet and Peasant" ( Gay Flamingoes)
These were classic Bomb Tunes.
Even when the tunes were popular tunes, they were special.
"Dr Zhivago", "Ghost Riders" by Silver Stars, "Penny Lane" by Starlift; these are bomb tunes.
So while enjoying the Bertie Marshall's arrangement of "Gypsy Rondo", let's pay our respects to the master, and appreciate a real Bomb tune from Hylander's Steel Orchestra.
