The Mighty Sparrow is ailing, and we wish him the best, and send him our prayers. He is a most beloved artist, and the Greatest calypsonian of them all.
Many of us who came of age as Birdie began his domination of the calypso scene rememberr his early years as streetwise young man, full of the bravado of the streets.
"Ten to One is Murder" is his account of an incident where he was attacked by a gang and allegedly pulled a gun. I've always thought that this calypso was part of Sparrow's defense strategy, as he musically weaves a tale that anyone could sympathize with.
Notice how he says "Ah hear pitow powand the crowd start to scatter", Insinuating there was gunfire, but not saying where it came from?

Thanks WST...yes we all wish Sparrow comfort and peace...he has been in poor heatlh..
for quite some time...when he was here in Tampa, FL USA...a few years ago...he could hardly
perform. But I was heartended and BLESSED last summer (2012) to be able to see him
perform at a tribute to him, in his home town of GRAND ROY, GRENADA...when he sang very well,
and seemed like he was in much better shape than when he came to Tampa. So I had hoped
he could get on for more years. We all have to face getting old..with all of its issues.
WISH HIM GOOD CARE IN THE HOSPITAL and hope for a recovery.
but it was
If I remember correctly, Sparrow was involved in a violent confrontation and was alleged to have pulled a gun.
Whether deliberate or not, this calypso was an astute public relations move by Sparrow , which helped to generate public sympathy for "Birdie".
Notice how he mentions gunshots, without associating himself to the shooter?
Smart!
And it was also a great calypso.
