Dance of the Furies! Monsters and Furies take the form of Dragons, Imps and blue devils, typical characters in Carnival Old Mas portrayals in Trinidad and Tobago. The chorus comprises the larger next of furies who bar the door from Orpheus. Other characters in this dance are: King Beast: The King Beast wears a large dragon mask with a protruding tongue. He is the guardian of the gates of the Underworld Axe Man: This Imp carries an axe in his hand. Agitania: This Imp is like the master of ceremonies. He carries a key used to open the gates of hell. The aim of the Agitania in this dance is to open the gates of the Underworld to Orpheus that he may retrieve his bride. The Axe man and other imps continuously try to restrain the more dangerous imps who wish Orpheus harm, reminding him that, though blessed by the Gods, in the Underworld he is still in grave danger. In the Lydians interpretation, the opera is put in the context of traditions of Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, where the shepherds are fancy sailors, and the grove is a panyard (hence the white pan racks which make up the stage decor) The Lydians production of Orpheus and Euridice at Queen's Hall Auditorium, St. Ann's, Trinidad and Tobago.
