Today I'm listening again to this masterpiece by Boogsie. To me, this is definitely one of Boogsie's top ten, maybe even one of his top five arrangements.
This is another example as to why I'm not a fan of panorama judging.
I particularly love the syncopated bass runs in this piece, reminiscent of pan music for the road back in the old days before electronic noise, when the sound of a steelband's basses could be heard from a distance, and signified that a band was approaching.
Like I always maintain, picking a winner on Panorama Finals night is purely a judgement call.
IMHO, Jit's arrangement of Kitch's "Guitar Pan" didn't beat Boogsie's arrangement.
Thr Judges just preferred Renegade's performance over Phase II's performance that night!
Listening to this tune again ( on my Ipod while working out) I realized how much Boogsie's bass arrangement reminded me of pan from the old days.
Anyone under forty cannot relate to this , but in the days before the DJ's and all that electronic noise, the real Power of Pan was felt on the road on Carnival day, when the first thing you heard from an approaching steelband was the bass rumbling in the distance.
Boogsie's bass arrangement in this tune reminded me of those days.
(I know young people don't like us old timers doing the"back in the day" thing, but that's what we do. After all, we lived it.)
