  • Some may think that in the sixties pan was relatively primitive compared to today, but they would be wrong.

By 1966 most bands were complete orchestras, with high tenors, tenors, double tenors, seconds, guitars, cellos, tenor bass and six bass.

And many of the best tuners ever were in their prime back then.

Yes, there have been a bit of fine-tuning of the pan family since then, but with the exception of the electronics, nothing really consequential.

And of the 62 bands that took part in this festival , I guaranty that the vast majority of them were on the road that year and also took part in panorama.

And I know that there were bands that not participate. For example, in Marabella neither Southern Marines nor our fledgling band Scarlet Symphony were strong enough that year to participate.

So when we talk making progress over the last 45 years or so, the question begs to be asked, Where?

About the only area where we  have improved is, thank God, in pan music education in schools.

But as far as advancing the lot of the steelband and defining its role in the culture, we have done little.

  • Thanks You Glenroy. I was there and have never forgotten this performance. Reliving it is wonderful. This is what i miss about steelbands now.
