  • We are not to be fooled by the growth of pan in foreign, it is only happening in places of learning. The community steelband growth is almost nonexistent and  the rest they all struggling just like the bands in the Mecca.

    .

    • An interesting point Cecil but in America and the rest of the world you can not separate schools from community. In most of these high schools and elementary schools in America where steelbands are popping up it seems daily the school is the center of the community.

      bugs

      • Bugs: I love your parenthetical: "It seems daily!"

      • Bugs: Yuh real smart, boy. Tell dat Earl Richards fellah to appoint you the LEADER LEADER and I will gladly be YOUR ASSISTANT. By the way, I always enjoy your intricate analysis of PAN MUSIC!!!

      • Yesterday my 9 year daughter in 4th grade told me they were teaching them about calypso, its rhythmic beat as part of their class music education.  This is in a local school system I consider to be very conservative but open to the changing demographics in its school population.

Between YouTube, Facebook and other social networks, globalization is changing our access and knowledge of the steel pan art and calypso music forms. Time for a REALITY CHECK, the "we ting" has become "their ting" and it's growing at a fast speed. They are planting the seeds for the next generation of Ellie's, Bertie's, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington's and who knows what's next.

        • You could not have put it any better, odw!!! "We ting" has now become "their ting" and everybody blind to this. Exactly: With all that musical education being put into these kids here in AMERICA it is only a matter of time before the Quincys and Dukes emerge playing pan.

      • Bugs, we have pan people graduating with all kind of degrees and the only job with pan they could take care of a family with is to teach, few  will try to make it as a pannist, the bottom line is there is no industry for pan. For me I think the best thing we can do  for pan is to convince those in the Mecca that by not participating in carnival they are depriving themselves of being a part of a money making machine that is already working, they have to realise they have to fight for market share. The steelband was there in the early days, now big money running they absent, they evolve out of the big money.

  • Teach music from grade/standard one so students in TNT would be able to read music and not have to learn to play pan by ear.

  • Pan in foreign don't need to be governed by anyone in every country they will just do what they have to do. In the Mecca there  is a significant difference that one cannot ignore, the steelband is tied to carnival weather we like it or not, they have to ffight for their share of the market or continue the downward spiral into nothingness.

    • TRUE DAT, Cecil. Real stupidity about PAN TRINBAGO ruling pan in every country worldwide!
