On behalf of the Montanos and myself, let me take this opportunity to extend to the parents of Dave Marcellin sincerest sympathies on his passing. I last spoke with him at Steve ( the aircondition man's) house some time ago when he dropped by as his car was causing him a few problems. I was his English teacher when he was a student at St. Joseph's College in St. Joseph many years ago. We hit it off right there and then at the school and I must add that I could not have asked for the friendship of a more pleasant, respectful, affable, energetic, and magnetic young man. To me, he remained himself throughout the years, with no falsities. about him. I have never seen him annoyed except when trying to get people to understand the whole concept of jazz and its possibilities and even that annoyance caused one to sit up and pay attention to his fare as he toiled in the vineyard as an exponent of that lively musical idiom called JAZZ. I will definitely miss you my brother. Rest in peace and be assured that your time on earth here has been well spent. May the angels dance as you wend your way towards heaven playing your ethereal music. Former teacher Mr. Wilson.
my deepest condolences to the marcellin family on the passing of dave. he was such a beautiful person and so gifted i remember him complimenting me more than i thought i deserved. god bless you dave, i was at the receiving end of your god given talent and i was happy to share the same stage with you., last year [naparima bowl]. god bless you and rest in peace my friend.
As a young musician growing up in Houston, Dave Marcellin is one of my mentors/heroes. Just as any student would study some of the more well known musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, etc. I listened to and studied Dave. He is a huge part of why I do what I do today. On top of all that he was a very good friend, and part of the family. He will surely be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
I was shocked when StClair Baltazar called me today and told me that Dave, my friend and brother had passed. We have been friends from school days, I lived around the corner from him in St.Joseph Trinidad, where we attended the same elementary school. After migrating to the United States our paths crossed again when he came through New Orleans persuing his music, I was living there and we hooked up again. I then moved to Laredo Texas because of my job and came to Houston one day. Somebody told me that Dave Marcellin lived there and we hooked up again and I eventualy moved to to Houston back in 1988 and we stayed hooked up. When I got married Dave played "High Mas" all through the ceremony and when my daughter got married he did the music again. My little daughter affectiionately calls him Uncle Dave. I have watched his daugthers grow up and was present at eldest girl's wedding. This Carnival season we hanged out at Desperadoes Panyard and I visied him at his perents' home as I usally do weather he is there or not.Mr and Mrs. Marcellin and the rest of the family please accept condolences from my family and I. May God give you all the strenght and courage to cope with such a great loss. Cheryl and the kids Judy, Nicole and I will always be there to lend what ever suppport we can. God bless Dave and his family and may he rest in piece.
To the family and friends of Dave Marcelin may the almighty God grant you the strength and courage to cope with your great loss may you also seek his guidance now and always knowing he will never forsake you.
From my family and I
May he rest in peace
