Val, why should we have to settle for mediocrity as a norm today, it looks like the "baby boomers" are settling for too much carp today when they fought for certain standards in their youth. Lets not let our youth settle for anything that's below the standard we enjoyed in our youth. Our generation has benefited from a lot that our parents provided, why are we afraid to confront our youth, is it because we never gave them the guidance that was given to us?
The weakness with the pan tunes concept is that today's pan tunes are not seen by the public as "carnival tunes".
And this may be particularly so with "own tunes".
In earlier times , the popular pan tune was a popular "carnival" tune , since carnival was seen in the context of steelbands on the street, the steelband being an integral part of the carnival parade.
Today , it will be more difficult to sell a pan tune to the general public regardless of the quality of that tune , because the tune is seen not in the context of a "carnival tune", but as a pan tune , strictly aimed for the panorama and its fans,.
Every year we have about 20-30 pan songs composed for pan, I would say half of them are pretty good. The problem with panorama today is not the tunes but the arrangements, who could use more runs seem to be the order of the day, few arrangers try to be different. The whole music scene has change over the last couple of years, you have people creating beats and the performers just add their voice, the music is more about the beat, in my opinion the "death" is about the whole music scene in the Mecca.
Cecil: What do you think about THE BIGGEST YARD? I think that Phelam Goddard married the nouveau pan song styling to the traditional calypso using the accent on TODAY'S MUSIC. Between him and Liam Teague I can see them heading in a new continuous direction over the next few years.
Notice that they never use the word "PAN" in Phelam's song and also notice that Rudder sings right over the music all the way through without taking any of the EXPECTED vocal breaks.
THE BIGGEST YARD was made for PAN and PANORAMA by an experienced musical team. EXODUS might just kick up some DUST IN DEY FACE.

You are correct Claude 2 strong songs from Pellham and Liam but yuh know Boogsie ain't coming up soft. 2016 is looking like it's going to be a dog fight and when this happens fans get a treat.
Mr. Valentine Young: Two of the RAREST CULTURAL COMMODITIES you can search for in T&T are GOOD PAN TUNERS and GOOD CALYPSO COMPOSERS. So once you say "OWN TUNES" you are CONSIDERABLY DILUTING the QUALITY of the CALYPSO.

The question should be: has Panorama done justice to 'own tunes'?
