Females shine at East Single Pan prelims

Trinidad Express Newspapers

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Pan Trinbago’s National Steelband Panorama 2014 competition kicked off at the Arima Velodrome on Thursday night with the preliminary round for single pan bands in the eastern region.

Of the 21 bands which faced the judges, three tuners—Herman “Guppy” Brown, Desmond “Mappo” Richardson and Leonard Lera—accounted for 11 with three, three and five, respectively.

Surprisingly most of the bands fielded the maximum of 45 players and even though several players performed with multiple bands they did not make too much of a difference.

....Once again the majority of players were both very young and female, thereby outnumbering their male counterparts almost three to one.

  • Patrick, you ON POINT! In the Steel Pan Blueprint For Success, I suggested having an photo ID system, with every player having a unique number, that identifies who they are, and the band they represent. This will also be used to pay them for performances, and royalty payments and other benefits. The photo ID will have a passport-type photo, their address, date of birth, and ID number, and should have a magnetic strip, where it can be used at ATM's or can be used for security purposes and other administrative protocols. Ghost.

    • Hello Ghost, what you are saying make a lot of sense, we need to do it today where money is of concern. Also working out a decent paycheck for players, make it worthwhile for them to come and play. And make the premises safe for everyone. Add security. If these things are in place there will be more commitment to the band by residents in the area.

      • Yep. Speaking of security, Johann Chuckaree posted that at the soca event yesterday, his cell phones were stolen. Anyone read about that? Ghost.

  • Here we go again, 'several players perform with multiple bands', this is not a competition, its a joke. Without loyalty to a band you can't improve, hence the crap by many young arrangers today. The females listen to instructions and abide by the rules.
