Hamilton , CA - In three weeks time, Dejehan Hamilton will introduce an instrument to a part of the world where its never yet been performed.

The 20-year-old musician from Hamilton’s north-end will be the first to perform the steel pan in Singapore. Ever.

Hamilton –stagename Luckystickz – is a second-year student at Boston’s prestigious Berklee School of Music and he's committed to taking his instrument not just to new places, but to new genres, beyond its roots in Caribbean music into Jazz, Gospel and more.

WST note - The Steelpan has been present in Singapore at least since 1998. http://ning.it/1difKTZ

  • I would like to apologize to all of those who may have been offended by this article. My information came from the production company bringing me down to Singapore and i'll make sure to do due diligence on my end in the future. However, I'm happy to be a part of the global exposure of our instrument and culture. Although the tone of the article may come across as "I want to be the first and last", I assure you this is not the case! I am humbled to be apart of a new era of pan player who are continuing and taking the instrument to new heights. Thank you for following my story, there's much work still be done and I am blessed to be apart of this journey.

    • Luckystickz:

Stuff like that will happen once in a while once people are WRITING ABOUT YOU. You may even end up on the front page of the ENQUIRER like so many BIG STARS DO. You have a NUMBER ONE FAN here on this website.

      • thankyou for your support Claude

  • Now, why you guys messing with Claude's "Messiah"? Maybe,it's his "second coming". Or, is it the third? lol. This video didn't impress me that much, by the way, for a variety of reasons. His playing on this clip, didn't really impress me, but then again, I am around people like Othello Molineaux (my "steel drum Messiah") since 1985. Of course, being around people like Leon "Foster" Thomas, Freddie Harris, and Iman Pascall while at FMU, makes me kind of bias towards them. Which makes me ask: Foster came out with a new "album" this year, why hasn't it been featured on When Steel Talks? I haven't heard any reviews on it, and the few tracks that I heard, sounded really, REAL good! I saw a video by Spiceman with Johann Chuckaree playing in CA, and I was like: DANG! Chuckaree is NO joke!!! Not to mention Duvonne Stewart! But, really, this video didn't impress me. But, hey, "to each his own (messiah)".☺

    Ghost.

    • After I listened to the video I went and checked out his other stuff. Also remember that he is very young and has miles to travel.

More than that, it takes a certain discipline and character and humility to star and sustain as a star. I looked past the discussion about whether he was the first to play in Singapore or not and just evaluated his long term potential as a musician AND pan player.

That is why I said he "WILL BE be a global star"!

  • The Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra visited Singapore between September 20th - 26th 2011. They performed at the Formula 1 racing meet during the period along with a number of other world renowned acts such as Linkin Park, Rick Astley, and Shaggy. The concert tour was extremely successful with the band receiving rave reviews at each performance.
