Remember when most Steelbands had their chief cook and bottle washer, for example North Stars pans tuned by  Anthony Williams, tune arranged by Anthony Williams and captain of the band Anthony Williams, or Trinidad All Stars pans tuned by Neville Jules tune arranged by Neville Jules and captain of the band Neville Jules, Are we producing new TUNERS that cannot or will arrange a tune or arrangers that cannot or will not tune a pan, Most of the Steelbands uses the same tuners is that why their tonal quality sounds alike.  IT IS WHAT IT IS .

  • No, it's not lost forever. There are still those who, in spite of having a committee, want to control everything. In some instances things have changed from the badjohn running everything to committee. There are still "badjohns" trying to run things.

    • Patrick Ramdoo: Yuh living in TRINIDAD and you do not know that BADJOHNS RUNNING PANTRINBAGO. Dey eh trying to run things; dey been running things for years now and years to come. And please tell Rowley and Martin Daly that a LIVE STEELBAND PERFORMANCE in FOREIGN does not automatically inspire the listener to run and buy a ticket to fly to TRINIDAD to hear MORE PAN.

  • Lost forever!!! Like the GENERAL PRACTIONER!!!

Wake up fellahs!!! It is 2016!!!

  • Today  responsibility is now shared. can you imagine paying ah Tony Williams or Jules today.

  • That example of uniqueness was done in the interest of the bands, today it is still done in some instances, but in the interest of the person. That uniqueness has now gone in the direction of a dictatorship. Back then there was no MONEY, but there was LOVE (for the art form).
Today we have the "hands on" type. Hands on the money. Today the chief cook and bottle washer want to be everything but for a different reason.
  • Yes, that UNIQUENESS is gone for the steel bands. Those were the days when the captain controlled the bands IDENTITY because of his skills, you were able to recognize from a distance the sound of All Stars, Invaders, Despers, Cavaliers and Highlanders. Like Bertie Marshall said “the tuner is the man…he is the one who perfect it to make it sound like it should like”.

What changed? The call for standardization and demands for production in my opinion, in this new age of eCommerce and the profit incentive, pan tuners are sacrificing quality over quantity.

    • I love that video. Thanks for posting.
