Smith Mountain Eagle
Virginia, USA - Inside the Smith Mountain Lake Gallery on a bitterly cold Saturday, Richard Rudolph directs a group of 15-20 adults thumping on brightly colored drums from the Island of Trinidad to bring a new sound to SML. In a stark dichotomy, members of the Parrot Pan Steel Band are dressed in a mixture of overcoats and tropical themed T-shirts to get into the spirit of the island groove. Rudolph sits at a traditional drum set in the center of room banging two drumsticks together, occasionally walking around the room to motivate people to feel the rhythm.
The Parrot Pan Steel Band has only been in existence for a few months. Most of its members never played steel drums before. With one lesson, Rudolph gets them to play a song.
