  • So,  hate to mention this again , but am I the only one who thinks that  PanTrinbago's pricing of these products makes no sense?

At $350.00 tt that comes to over $50.00 US a pop.

Now ,as a culture lover and supporter of the art-form I will buy it for my collection, , but  I find the price to be a bit high, and would I think be especially so for an unemployed young Trini pan lover.

And furthermore , there is no comparable product on the market , Blu Ray or DVD that costs as much.

Such pricing does not encourage market growth , it is priced to encourage piracy.

IMHO we need more moderate pricing to encourage maximum exposure for the product , and for the artform.

Profits will come later , when the market is established.

Since , as someone suggested , I see no real effort to attempt to reach an international market ( via Amazon, com , for example), it seems to me that the pricing is only geared for visitors to the country , and to gouge the local consumer.

    • Of course you right Glenroy.

I think based on what we know from past experiences and the info PJJ gave us we can assume that there was little or no investment this project. WACK is probably handling all of the production cost. Which is why it looks like WACK is cutting corners at every break. The packaging, the quality of the post production and the pricing will take a hit. Pan Trinbago has nothing to loose. They are going to get a percentage of sales. The government probably gave them money to produce a quality product but you know how that goes.

The question is why did WACK take on the job if it could not produce a 2015 quality product?

WACK wants to make quick buck. Long term marking is not an option.

      bugs

      • Bugs, From producing a DVD to NAPA to building a Hospital and Stadium everything they do ends up sub-standard, ah wonder why?

      • Bugs: You and Glenroy making all my points for me. Ah Doh have to post any more!!!

    • When you addressed the pricing issue some time earlier, you SO SPOKE for me that I felt no need to SECOND THE MOTION on the forum. But I am in full agreement with you on this matter.

PJJ did an excellent job describing the ON THE GROUND problems faced by PRODUCERS across the board.

The truth is that the LOCALS don't have a clue about the foreign markets and may even be afraid of them. At the end of the day we can sit here and propose a million solutions to problems we see facing the steelband industry but the RULERS OF THE CASTLE in Trinidad are too far behind to be able to implement any progressive changes.

      • Claude , I think you have something there , with your theory of fear of the open market. And in a way that fear pervades a lot of the pan environment , resulting in a reluctance to go "out of the box".

I think they make their price calculations based entirely on their presumed sales , with a profit added.

I can see the need to recover the cost of producing the video, but don't they consider the concept of long term investing?

I might even suggest reissuing copies of past panoramas and selling them at cost, to get them out there in circulation..

Even this should help grow the market, and gain exposure for the panorama genre and the steelband.

I would think that this would be desirable , and beneficial.

  • Where can the dvd's be purchased in Bklyn, NY   aka; Tahzann, aka; Culy

  • Just a quick word about the set..I purchased my copy last Friday and have ben reviewing it all weekend. For the more technical reader, there are a couple oxymorons in the DVD description e.g. 'the DVD is recorded in HD'. The DVD format cannot support HD video by definition, so this should actually read 'the master was recorded in HD' or similar statement. That said, the DVD is a compressed version of the original recording and it is watchable, although the video could be sharper still. The audio is 2 channel stereo, and is pleasing to the ear for the most part, although the clarity of the basses could be improved for many of the bands. The packaging is nothing to talk about, and the liner notes are non-existent, so if you are buying this, its mainly for the audio first and the video next.

Overall, I am happy with the purchase as it allows me to enjoy all the performances that day, many of which were very entertaining. I hope that the marketing people will get this out into the digital domain at some point and make the discs available internationally, but until then, get your hands on a copy from someone in Trinidad. A must see.

    • First, if you don’t have a High Definition TV (1080p/i picture quality/pixels) capable or a Computer Monitor that’s HD with a video card that supports HD videos you are not going to get the full effects of the video display. The same with the audio, if the audio is STEREO meaning 2 channels  and your computer SOUND Card supports only stereo audio or your TV audio is only stereo, you’ll  get a stereo output nothing more.

New audio systems comes with audio processors that allow you to manipulate SOUND output with 5.1 and 7.2 channels, 2 channel STEREO sound systems are considered outdated for some. We are living in a world of DIGITIAL technology from Surround Sound to Home Theatre systems to Blu-Ray ready dvd players.

I’ve noticed the DVD was promoted only as a HD and no mention of the audio quality. High Definition has been Standard in the broadcast industry for quite some time. Standard Definition is (SD)720x 480 is optional and still used by low carrier systems, for any audio/video enthusiast the differences in the output can be breath-taking.  This to me, its all about recreating REALISM in what you SEE and HEAR.  No matter what, I’ll do my part to support the Art-Form. This I know is a collector’s item.

      • I will also get a copy when it becomes available. DJ is right , though. DVD is by definition SD (standard defination )

You're right about broadcast , ODW , where HD is common, but a high definition "dvd" would be a Blue Ray.

Pan Trinbago eh reach dey yet.
