  • A Lifetime Legacy MANDELA.

  • President Nelson Mandela as I always say is one if not the greatest leader in the twentieth century

may Almighty God the God of Israel  bless his soul and grant him peace and eternal rest, one of the greatest men of our times

  • Ok when I look I might. Yes Wanderer was a little short guy . He used to sing on the promenade concerts a lot in those days. Don't know if he is still around . Another one used to make us laugh was this Bajan guy the mighty Slammer. He used to sing "this monkey too bad that is why I do not like him" and he used to shout out Slammer.
  • Thanks GRJ , I don't remember that calypso. As a matter of fact I don't think I know any of his . Was he from Marbella ? The only one I remember from that area is Peter ( The mighty Wanderer) don't know if you knew him. Blessings
    • Of course I knew Wanderer, he was a little guy, handicapped if I remember correctly.

I'm surprised that you're not familiar with Cypher. The Clown Prince of Calypso was one of the great ones.

You should check him out. I've posted several of his songs on this site.

  • Hey Brenda do you remember when Miriam Makeba came to Trinidad sometime early sisties I think. The whole Island was singing pata pata . Not sure but I think Harry Belafonte came the same year also. GRJ if you know please help me out here. Blessings.
    • Gons, what I remember about Makeba in Trini is a Cypher calypso called "Papers" in which he complained about people using newspapers with calypsonians pictures as toilet paper.

At the end of his kaiso, Cypher mutters something like ":carry Makeba, she only making a lot of noise with "pata pata pata".

      I don't think cypher was a fan :)

  • Thanks Peter if I sounded a little harsh in my comment before let me apologize its just that Canada loved Nelson Mandela as you it's among a few countries that stood by his side, he never forgot that so the media here spent all day yesterday replaying his visits . He made three. So thus the reply . We always enjoy the Soweto choir the songs dances Costumes etc. you should hear them do Bob Marley's One Love. I think this would be the perfect song to be sung by them at his going home celebration . I think this would be the most watched event of this century. We so have another South African that comes here regularly as well called Umoja. They are equally good. Blessings.
  • Simple answer Peter , you should be living in Toronto and you wouldn't ask this question .we play South Africa East West , North , as a matter of fact the Soweto Gospel choir is coming here in February for the third time so don't think this music is not recognized . I will let the other members comment on their cities. Not a good day to get me riled up Peter. We just lost a very great man. The man of the century . Blessings.
    • Kudos to you, Winston ... keep it up!

The Soweto choir I presume is the same one that featured in the documentary, Amandla, which itself included several pan playable traditional and political songs.

      Cheers,  Peter
