The government has finally acquiesced to the numerous requests and pleas from nationals and others worldwide, for Sparrow's medical bills to be paid for by the state. The Prime Minister also announced the award of the the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to the calypso icon, a long overdue commendation.
She also announced that masman Peter Minshall will be given the deeds to a state property that he has occupied for some time.
All of this of course comes much too late in the eyes of many (and for the wrong reasons) as in sparrow's case he was severely ill for and hospitalized for some time, actually suffering and recovering from a stroke, when many feared he would have passed.
As with everything cultural, the government had dropped the ball and only decided to award the two great contributors to our cultural landscape and status worldwide, when there was a big hue and cry from the citizens demanding that Sparrow's bills be paid.
Unfortunately it seems that cultural practitioners, regardless of their status and contributions to the national psyche, have to be terminally ill or the point of destitution before the government acknowledges their contribution and does something for them and even this, only after someone else has pointed to the unacceptable condition of the person involved.
On the other hand no time is wasted in awarding underachieving friends to high positions or to lucrative contracts, at the drop of a hat.
Sparrow, according to the Prime Minister, only has to tender his bills to have them paid by the state. This is as low as one can get. The man should have been granted several million dollars at once, regardless of what his medical bills. Continuing care and rehabilitation will cost a lot and the Birdie also has to live in a certain manner, befitting of his stature.
When millions are given out for prizes every year to insignificant purveyors of the crap that passes for chutney and soca, the government should be ashamed to ask Sparrow to present his bills before being given his due.
What if the man had died instead of recovering from his illness? Would there have been a posthumous award? Or would they have let the time quietly pass, breathing a sigh of relief for having dodged a bullet?
The music world and Sparrow fans must be hanging their heads in shame and disbelief.
Great news. Next, Ellie Mannette for his contributions to the evolution of pan. Calypso must return to its greatness when it ruled the airwaves!
I thought Ellie give up Trinidad?
Got nothing to do with thoughtful (hope you were being sarcastic). They were pressured to do it by the many people from near, far and wide who have demanded that something be done. As it is they have fallen woefully short of what sparrow deserves. (See my post below)
