Trinidad & Tobago Newsday

Tobago, W.I. - The RBC Redemption Sound Setters Steel Orchestra recently launched its annual July-August holidays, “Redemption Academy Pan Camp” for children ages five and up.

The camp will run for four to five weeks after which the class will host a concert to showcase what they have learnt as well as to receive certificates of participation. Redemption panyard is located on Montgomery Road in Bethel, right next to the Montgomery Primary School and across the street from the Montgomery Recreational Ground.

....Captain of Redemption, Marie Toby noted that for the first time they will have about 80 children in the camp, well over what they had initially planned for.

  • Congratulations to RDC.
It is in projects like this that are taking place all over Trinidad and Tobago that the GOTT should provide money and resources. These activities save more of our youth than any multi million dollar basket ball competition and could cost much less. It is not easy to promote for PR but a good publicist could do it

    Suggeastion for PanTrinbago:
Do a survey of all such projects (on stream and planned). I am sure there are some surprises here.
Determine what resources they need to enhance and continue  the programmes.

Make a presentation to the relevant ministry for assistance in the 2012-2013 budget.

Make the presentation to all the chambers of commerce, service clubs and other business organisations who are calling for action on crime as well.

For the bands concerned. Local small businesses in your area may be persuaded to make donations in cash and /or kind to your programmes. It will be in their self interest.

    • The government of the day isn't interested in promoting pan even if it means a reduction in crime. They are intent on diluting the influence of pan in T and T while continuing to pay lip service to the pan fraternity.

Note that the recent initiative to promote music education in the panyards is utilizing musical instruments other than pan: a thinly disguised effort to eradicate pan and replace it with instruments more to their liking.

      • Congrats to Sister Toby and others in the administration of Redemption. I concur with Wayne!
Whether it is by accident or design, using panyards to promote music education using musical instruments other than pan seems sinister and could be counterproductive. So too is the replacement of the Pan in Schools Program by some multicultural creature. My concern is about what is being done in the panyards to advance the cause of the national instrument.  Also, where is Pantrinbago on these issues?

  • Beautiful,Respect,God Bless.

  • Beautiful.....This should be happening with All the interested Youth in TandT....The Future ....May it continue to Grow.....
