No steel band at Leicester Caribbean Carnival 2010

As the manager of the only professional steelband in Leicestershire... I think it's a shame it has come to this. Contrast have never missed playing at their own carnival so much and to say it was the 25th anniversary of carnival here and the theme being, celebrating our Caribbean heritage,even more shamefull Pan was not represented!!!!!

I am sorry to disagree with Mr CHRISTOPHER but it is the same old story as long as the steel bands play for free they are welcome but as soon as they have to pay for the Art Form they dont want it but they can find money for Sound systems and Reggae artists to perform in the park and pay them big money and call it carnival and it is not just Leicester Carnival its all of them Manchester Nottingham Liverpool Bristol t6he lot apart from Notting Hill Carnival and leeds none of the others employ steel bands they should not call it carnival because the tradition of carnival is Mass Pan and Calypso so i think they should call it a Reggae festival because in Jamica Carnival only Steelband and Calypso music is allowed to be played for that day.

  It's such a shame, but this happens alot and it boils down to one thing...a lack of respect for steel bands. I've heard the same story myself about how they don't have the money to pay for a steel band and yet; they've hired well known artists for the same function that cost a fortune. Sometimes they even have the nerve to ask bands to reduce their price (which is already low) or play for free!
