According to recent reports, the 2010 NY panorama will be available over the internet for a fee. New York steelband leaders claim they were unaware of the situation.  Moreover, no agreement was setup for the bands to share in potential lucrative financial income.  The promoters of the New York panorama, WIADCA, have provided information for the public to purchase the view-stream on their website http://www.wiadca.com/

  • People should not take part in the exploitation of Pan People and Pan Music. I certainly will not buy that service if that is the case. Take a stand people.
    • Sarah,

to be honest WIADCA is only doing what any competent business will do, which is trying to maximize profits. It is the responsibility of steel band associations to sign a contract, which spells out the details, not WIADCA.

However, I do have a question for WST, Bugs and everyone else...

Since the arrangements are the property of the arrangers (and not the bands), does WIADCA have the rights to broadcast their music over the air and worse, for a fee? Another question is....even though SBL's signed an agreement in regards to the sale of DVD's, does that make them legal representatives of the arrangers? In other words does WIADCA need signatures from arrangers before selling their music in the form of DVD's or online streaming?

Yes, I know...I am opening a can of worms on this, but the arrangers own the music not the bands...even though the bands pay for it, because it is a work for hire. For the bands to own the music, the arranger must transfer all rights of the music to a particular steelband or the arranger must be an employee of a particular band...

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I totally disagree with you. An arranger in America is simply carrying out what is known as services rendered. He owns nothing unless there is an agreement as such. Furthermore, within the cultural norms of operation among steelbands it is understood that the band owns the arrangements. I've heard the biggest name arrangers say this.

GP, laws and rules must make sense within the context of one's culture and life practices. Anything outside of this is plain mischief making for ulterior motives. A perfect example of this is the dealings with the American Indians and Africans.

If everyone is on the same page and has the same understanding then it's not a problem.

  • Kudos to all that listed their opinion, but I am going to pay the $8.00 for the live stream. It's too late for "pro/con."
Last year we got it free. I did my part by E Mailing WIADCA my deep appreciation, and I also included same in my book.
Until 90% of our Caribbean people get involved in the political process of voting for representation and holding our elected accountable, we will be always having, "They don't like we, they don't respect we" etc, etc. WIADCA or any other entity will be mindfull whenever a decision compromises of the citizens who have the ballot.
Back to Panorama, History will be made at tonight's Brooklyn Panorama by the Steel Orchestra that wins.
I will deliver after the results are out.
    • Ian, paying for a stream is not the issue here. The issue is about the SBL claiming that they were unaware of the paid stream, therefore making it seem as though they were left out of the opportunity to add some copper to their bottom line. You went off on the wrong tangent. Enjoy Panorama. I will too. JL-C.
      • Hello Janice,
I am on your side. I am also tired of panmen pleading total ignorance, but did not want to call a spade a spade at this point. I am guilty of taking the easy way out this time (LOL)
I enjoy having cerebral dialogue and will like to speak with you. Please call me at (954) 792-1879.

        Sincerely,
        Ian
        • Hi Ian,

          I'll call you. Just got back in the house. ;<}
  • This doesn't make sense.

I assume that there must be some kind of business arrangement between the performing steelbands and WIADA, and this should cover broadcast rights, including webcasting..

I have a hard time believing that steelband leaders got "blindsided" by WIADCA.

Could it be that they just didn't read the fine print?
    • Good point there Glenroy. It is hard for me to believe that information which is available to all, globally, was not known by Steelband Leaders. Reading, and understanding, the fine print is a part of proper management. JL-C.
  • i think we should wait and see what wiadca come up with i order the panorama i live in san franciso i hope that wiadca do what is right for the pan men and pan women in the regin hope the stream is good support the pan movement one love.steelman
