Having played in that festival and having heard the performances and the Adjudicator Mr. John Russell remarks this brings back very pleasant memories for the race between these 2 bands was on since the semis when many of us thought that Synco was ahead with their performance of Poets and Peasants for the were just SUPERB . Mr Russell summed it up this way as he told Synco " that he wished he could have wrapped up their performance in a piece of paper and taken it back with him to England ". An excited Queen's Hall showed their appreciation to this for we all felt the same . He then told North Stars " that when they play the air sparkles with electricity ". The crowd response was an uproar . So this was a Historic Festival for it showcased Pan in all its GLORY and MAGNIFICENCE . It was an Honour to have been there .
According to the official results of the 1966 Steel Band Music Festival between these 2 Icons, (Don't Quote me on this, still under Investigation),
Poet & Peasants Panam North Stars 97 City Syncopators 92
"Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" Panam North Stars 93 City Syncopators 88
Intermezzo in Eb Panam North Stars 98 City Syncopators 85

Therefore, Panam beat City Syncopators by a Total of 23 Points Overall, so even tho a Band played a tune more gracefully, does not necessarily means it was the Best, the best is Awarded according to Points. (again, Points are still under Investigation) lol
I got these Points from a friend of mine and I too was not sure of it's accuracy due to the remarks by the Adjudicators, that's why I said (still under investigation) I am hoping to get these points clarify.
Thanks for sharing the two different versions of Poets and Peasant from the 1966 Steelband Festival. It was wonderful to be afforded the opportunity to listen and compare the dynamic beauty, skill, talent, and creative movements in sound of both bands, again, after so many years. Both steelbands played superbly excellent on that Festival night. However, after my comparison-listening session I preferred the Sandbach City Syncopators version of interpretation. Mainly, because I felt a smoother, mellow sounding flow, of tone and sound, and their interpretation of the tune sounded closer, in similarity, to the original classical version. I truly loved both bands during their era; but, prefer City Syncos version and their Musical interpretation of the tune Poets and Peasants on that particular night. Again, thanks for sharing the sweetness of Pan, and enhancing recognition to a great talent and art-form. - Randy George
Pan Am in my estimation is the "Greatest Steel Orchestra" to ever play classical music on pan! However, just like "Sugar Ray Robinson" was the greatest to ever put on boxing gloves, he lost from time to time. In the case of who played this classical piece better, i agree with the assessment of Randy George,
for almost the same reasons! If i may say so, it sounded as if Pan Am "rushed it a little" and that is how it came across to me.
This is a JOKEY forum!
Here is another version. In 2005 WST captured New Dimension Steel Orchestra of Grenada as they prepared for the 2005 World Music Festival... The 2005 World Steelband Music Festival, was held that year at Madison Square Garden in New York

Claude Gonzales, forget bout Classics in Calypso tempo, that's different, We talking bout Classical music where you have to be precise. no Sharp notes and off notes, play it as it was written on the score, My kinda music, lol BTW I did hear that band from Grenada playing Poet and peasants at the Madison Garden, it was nice, but Panam and Synco was the best, my opinion
