Priest: Bring Indo music into pan

By CAROL MATROO and RATTAN JADOO - Trinidad Newsday - Monday, January 5 2015

ROMAN Catholic Priest Father Clyde Harvey threw out a challenge to Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra to include Indian classical music in with their repertoire as they continue to entertain with their melodious talent.

Father Harvey made this call as he delivered his sermon as the steelband celebrated their 80th anniversary thanksgiving service held at the Holy Rosary Church, 14 Park Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.

He said steelpan music had come a long way since children were not allowed to go to pan yards, and only those from a certain ethnicity were allowed to do so.

  • Over the Last Few Years. Innovator and Composer Ray Holman has been sending out The Indo Message with The Skiffle Bunch and no one is Paying attention. I hope we can Inco operate both Cultures and see How it works. Panorama is Trini Thing  Indian and African. I think its a Good Thing.

  • Do we have an Indian steelband in T&T? I know we have a Chinese one.

    • Cecil:The Samaroo Jets  is renowned, comprised a Indian Trini family band, remember?

      • Ayesha Do the Samaroo Jet play Indian music?

        • I think Catt has made a very appropriate post which answers your question Cecil.  I applaud the Trini Art. world, particularly Pan, for music of integration, resulting in much less discrimination and lots more diversity than other elements of society.

        • They play a very wide variety of music including Indian.

        • No I don't think so, Cecil. Remember to open the link I posted above.

Still remains, there is a sprinkling of Trini Indians who play Pan or participate in the Pan Movement. Tassa has captured many and there is a small sprinkling of Afros, I observe..

  • With all due respect to Fr.Harvey, If All Stars were to get gigs from the Indo community they would learn a few Indian songs, or if their players were about 30% indian, the fact is no on both counts so there you have it.

    • Ah Cecil, that's the big elephant in the room that no one wants to touch. The Indian population of Trinidad and Tobago has no interest in Pan or it's culture. And that is their right. But we should go around making stuff up that do not exist. All ah we is not one.
