Rush to learn music in panyards

Trinidad & Tobago Guardian

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - The Music Schools in the Panyard Programme began with a bang on Monday with citizens of all creeds, races and ages converging at the designated panyards to grasp the opportunity of learning to play a musical instrument. The programme, which was developed by the Culture Division of the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism, is making good use of the established network of panyards across the country to offer community residents training in both the practical and theoretical aspects of music.

“We had over 55 people coming in to join on Monday,” said Shivon Bourne, venue co-ordinator for the programme at the Exodus Panyard. “Even the senior folks, way into their 60s, are coming in and expressing happiness for the chance to fulfill their dream of learning to play a musical instrument,” he added.

  • Well it is about time... I have written a complete proposal document for a "National Musical Literacy Program for the Pan Yards of Trinidad & Tobago" since 2002 and have presented it to the former Pan Trinbago  administration and also the present administration. I have also presented this document to several ministries in the former government including the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education , Ministry of Community Development, even the former Prime Minister himself  oh yes and our own Pan man minister Junia Regrelo....the result was ZERO.

so Far I have presented this document to the "Gypsy" former Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism, the Ministry of Education and have been trying to send it to the Prime Minister, Mr. Jack Warner and other Ministries these keep bouncing back.

Nevertheless like I said it is about time that this project happens .I will send this document to WST to be posted

    • Well, Salah, it is time to fly down to Trinidad and get in the mix. Don't let this ship sail without you. Now that this consciousness is in the air and OFF THE GROUND you need to be personally knocking on some political doors and entering some political offices.

      • Well my brother Claude, I think for the present I have to pursue some personal endeavors which will eventually be of importance later ....for me it does not matter who scores the Goal as long as we are on the same team and the team eventually wins.

a National Musical Literacy program for the Pan Yards of Trinidad &  Tobago is an essential project that is long overdue.

    • Hello Salah:

I empathise with your frustrations.  Nevertheless, the only positive advice I can is offer is to keep hounding Jack Warner, who has time and again spent his own money on pan events (albeit mostly in/around his own constituency of Chaguanas).

  • No they provided by the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism.Errol Ince, Pelham Goddard and  Leston Paul ,just to name a few iconic Instructors that are in the program.

  • This is a wonderful realisation ... just one question:

Does anyone know if to the music instructors come from the pan sides themselves or are they provided by the Ministry?

    Thanks,  Peter
