“The Business of Pan”

by Nestor Sullivan

This presentation will analyse the ‘Business of Steelband’ within three specific areas of Steelband activities:Instrumentation; Musicianship and Administration. •

  • “Instrumentation” has to do with the supply of, and issues related to: Drums; Tuning; Chroming; Styles and Suppliers.
  • “Musicianship” will address the musical requirements of a Steel Orchestra, including but not restricted to: arranging; rehearsals and performances.
  • “Administration” will explore with the leadership capacities necessary for a successful Steelband.

These three elements of the Steelband will be examined in the context of the business which each generates in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean, and indeed - the world.

Saturday July 22nd, 2017
Theatre 1, UTT Campus at NAPA

His passion and dedication to pan led him to leadership positions in several organisations including: Captain and Manager of the Pamberi Steel Orchestra, and the Operations Manager of the Trinidad and Tobago National Steel Orchestra (TTNSO). Moreover, he has extensive experience in Pan Trinbago where he served as the Chairman (Eastern Region), Public Relations Officer (Central Executive) and Vice President (Central Executive).

Mr. Sullivan has also been a keen contributor to the training of the younger generation of Steel Pan Players and Tuners. He has served as a lecturer on the history of Steelband in the Advanced Pan Tuning Programme – a collaborative project between UTT and MIC. • Good going, Brother Nestor!

"Sollo", as we used to call him at St. Mary's College i the early 70's - when some students tried to form a steelband at St. Mary's, but the college was against it and we never got it going - is a true "panman".

Later in the mid 70's, after we had left college, I was a representative of Turban Starland at Eastern Region meetings of Pan Trinbago, of which he was chairman. These meetings were held at Dagga Hall in UWI, the original panyard of Birdsong, whose captain Dennis "Charlie" Philip, also attended St. Mary's College. "Sollo" was always looking for ways to improve and to move pan forward.

It is sad that certain uninformed and ignorant individuals would try to ridicule "Sollo" by saying that people like him

"does sit down in Trinidad and imagine they are running the world of pan"

    Nuff Respect, Sollo!

    Keep de flag flying!

George "Rampee" Rampersad - still goin strong an keepin de pan flag flying in Denmark.

    • Claude, greetings to you. Have not touched base with you in quite a while.
You got me going after reading the accomplishments of "Sollo". Then I read your comment and I sighed. Wow that is surely not the same Claude who has always been trying to get the pan players in the Mecca to get up and get.
Then "Rampee" makes his comment using an adjective that in no way describes who you have been over the years. That had me choking ..... hmmm. Cecil, bugs, odw, Bede, grj.... allyuh help...
Claude, it looks like Nestor is the one to contact to get this global music thing going.

  • The organisers should give serious consideration to rescheduling this event, because it clashes with the Big 5 Foundation concert.
