This is the reason why the Steelband has to have a certain status in the land, the DJ has no cultural value, how can you let the them side line the steelband? You find a way for the Steelband to contribute. you have to protect them because of their historical significance..
For Carnival 1979 STEELBANDS gave up the road to show how much power they had; they were going to deny the public of music for Carnival. Well the DEE JAYS say: Doh worry we go come out and BLAST. Well, when the people hear LOUD, CLEAR, SCREAMING SOCA fully blasting from MASSIVE SOUND SYSTEMS -- dey say yes pardner this is the REAL TING. AUTHENTIC CALYPSO meticulously recorded in the studio by the finest musicians in the land BLASTING FROM A BIG TRUCK. That is heaven for me!!! No crude COVER!!!
STEELBANDS cut dey own throat and now people crying like little children on this forum begging the DEE JAYS to leave the road and GIVE PAN A SECOND CHANCE. Race gone!!! Pan Loss!!!
I say:
TELL THE DEE JAY TO PLAY
ONLY SOCA MUSIC TODAY
FOR WHEN I FEEL THIS WAY
I COULD PARTY ALL DAY

My recollection of the Steelband boycott for Carnival 1979 is different to your's, For Carnival 1979 Steelbands came out on the road in full force, They boycotted going to the Queen.s Park Savannah and when they passed Down town stage the pans stopped playing and only the rhythm section played, after they cross the stage the pans started to play again. Despers was the only band to cross the Savannah stage thus breaking the boycott and Scrunter sang Woman On The Bass the following year in tribute to Despers and the Indian Girl playing Bass.
