And people have a habit of trying to push all kinda half-baked music and unqualified PAN MEN on me and demand that I like it/them. But THE WORLD knows good music when it hears it. And if your music is GOOD ENOUGH you will get invited to play on BIG WORLD STAGES (like Jonathan Scales and Andy Narell) and you will become BIG NEWS and we will all read about it. But it look like I will dead without seeing that day -- because I have been waiting for so long.

Ah wish Aquil Arrindell will DROP ALL THE POLITICS and stay home and study the music and practice the PAN because I think that he has the POTENTIAL to go GLOBAL. And nobody could MOVE KEITH DIAZ, anyway.

  • It is really becoming difficult to promoting my self as a performer and managing the rebellion against this corrupt executive. Beside my 9 to 5, and captain of San City. Being the ordination of the CIP is a full time work. It is time consuming and it takes a lot of stamina. But evil only prosper when good men dose nothing.

the music will come, lets concentrate on straitening out the organization.

    • Managing multiple priorities has always been a problem for musicians that’s why some hire managers, for those involved in Panyard management within the smaller bands, the arranger is the Captain, PRO, Accountant and decision maker for all things involved with their band and its membership, from an organizational stand-point don’t over-work yourself doing it alone. Delegate some of your responsibilities by selecting the right person or persons who exhibits the potential and discipline to take on the task.

My thinking have always been for example when you send your two representatives from your band to VOTE in the AGM, those individuals should represent the core values of your band, they should be well informed to understand the POWER of their VOTE. No yes-men, become activists for the betterment of your band and the steelband movement.  On the personnel side start developing the younger members “mentoring” helping them take on responsibilities that may/can shape career paths for them, this also contributes to the bands solidarity and effectiveness as an organized body.

Team management is the way to go; CHANGE can start from the bottom-up.

      • Totally agree with odw. i have two young ladies who already managing the group affairs. still need a lot of guidance but they coming along nicely.

      • odw: Aquil start complaining already and the man eh even start the BIG WUK yet as PRESIDENT OF PAN TRINBAGO. And if yuh see the long A-Z list that the man compile to restructure PAN TRINBAGO -- how he go accomplish all that change if he doh have the stamina to run San City and work ah 9 to 5 run up and down from SOUTH to NORTH and interface with the NCC and find time to go to the studio and record and fly from one country to the next performing and mow the lawn at home and respond to the constant criticism of his administration that will be coming from people like me and Bertel Gittens -- and most of all manage and assuage the frustration and exploitation of 10,000 PAN MEN.

If all this is too much for him to handle he better tell us right now so that I can start running a new campaign on this forum: GREGORY LINDSAY FOR PRESIDENT!!!

        • GREGRORY LINDSAY FOR PRESIDENT THEN. LOL

you guys know i am not interested in being president right.

i am just waiting for the part of the story where Aquil and his family lived happily ever after.

  • People, until we like and play our own music on the radios and other media we are not going any where... That's when the world hears your culture...only when you show it and play it for them. Nobody especially musicians and tourist want to hear their music played by anyone except their own... Perhaps they cuss! just like we do when others are attempting to play our instrument as well. when they want to hear their music they walk with it. When one visits another country you want to hear what they've got to offer.  Jamaica is very happy with us Trini as we promote their culture and we all appreciate it as Caribbean, some might feel bad, but, until we promote our music on a grand scale. We are just a dot on the Ocean. There is still hope as we do have our Panist working all over the globe and earning a little respect and money. These players are not "half- baked" as described by one writer, but competent musicians. What we need to do is to Promote, Promote, Promote.

  • Well Claude this is exactly my point and how I feel when the TT yearly panorama competition comes around. Everybody clamoring for money to pay players. Now with the garbage being heard by bands yearly at this competition, I believe it's time to adjust. Only pay pan players (maybe $4,000 each) if your band qualify for the finals. If you don't qualify, wait till next year. This may encourage arrangers to arrange a good tune that is worth listening to, and in this way, we get a quality program. Global Pan Music, you need to understand music that make people happy and be able to speak intelligently to promote your business. Difficult to compete with musicians like Andy Narell, and there are many like him all over the world who make good music.

  • We will all be dead before pan music reaches global status. American music is played on radio stations ALL OVER THE WORLD including the far reaches of Russia, the Far East , Europe and of course all Englush speaking countries. That's Global ! We can't even get most of our local stations to play what we produce. But hopefully our young pannists will see greater opportunities for working outside than ever before. Rome took a long time to build.
    • It is not that the music and players aren't good enough. It is that we don't like ourselves; Our radio stations don't play local because we still follow the colonial masters handbook. Everything foreign is good. So rather than have Paul-Keens, Tommy Joseph, Relator,Machel on our tv, we have Steve Harvey and the whole US crew. We need a leader with courage like Fidel Castro to block out all the US trash and develop and promote Trini talent. The US publishers and promoters not going to promote Trini culture as Trini culture. They will sell it as theirs. The British sells pan as British culture brought by immigrants. We are the most magnanimous people in the world. We promote and help everybody. My wife went to Jamaica. She told me she heard more reggae and dancehall music in Trinidad than in Jamaica. We have to start believing in ourselves and promoting ourselves.. The only time I see Trinis on tv is for the local news, when we have sport and if I watch Gayelle. whose programming leaves much to be desired.
