  • Pan Trinbago may want to rethink the schedule they set up that leaves all the pan yards in Trinidad and Tobago closed down except for eight of them two days before panorama. Talk about killing the spirit.

  • Hello to one and all !!! Now that they have moved into our sweet pan with their politics, I think this is where we will start to see things going down the drain. I am speaking about the judging. I would like someone to tell me after listening to phase II and listening to fonclaire how on earth could they leave out the south band ? If that is not politics, then tell me please what it is because that could never be fair judging.

  • And can anyone shed a little light on why none of these so called Pan Lovers Web sites are carrying the points scored by the bands in last night's competition?

Or are the judges still deliberating a rather unspectacular Panorama Semi Finals? I heard nothing new nothing to make me go WOW! listen to that!

The same tired runs, the same repetative jams, and relentless speed.
I have my own theory on why this is so.

The modern-day "Pan Song" as its now called is still stiffled by childish brainless lyrics and simple chord structure for the most part.

There is now very little to truely challenge the pannist or the arranger. I think the only way to break the slave like shackles that Panorama has on the bands would be to have Commercial sponsors to fund a year round competition based on a top ten hit parade of steelband releases. with each band getting the royalties from the sale of CD singles the public getting accustomed to hearing steelband music outside of panorama. The financial gain from tourism year round.
  • I was shocked to find some of the commentators hadn't heard some of the compositions at all, and so they couldn't comment too much on the arrangements. LOL

How on earth can you be a commentator for Panorama and go on national television/radio unprepared?
    • Don't get me started on TnT's Radio "personalities". They must be some of the most ill-informed (expletive deletives) jerks on the planet. And the station owners seem oblivious to it all. Not one station had anything constructive to say. They were all musically challenged. Never heard a majority of the tunes.Did not know the performing history of the bands. Continually fluffed their words. Spoke as if Lavantille were the sole source of the listening base. (By that I mean broadcasting on the internet calls for a certain standard of English to be spoken) All Trinis understand Tringlish, however the rest of the world understand or speak English. The sad part is the bands were registered back in December 2008.. Surely that was sufficient time for the Radio Station staff to do their research and ensure their broadcasters had all the pertinent information at their finger tips. This would have given the impression that they were efficient and professional. At one point I found myself saying please Trevor McDonald come back. The one person that appear to have had a grasp of some of the history was Ray Funk on WACK. He had to leave Alaska and come down to Trinidad to show the way. Throughout Yesterday I streamed WACK i95 and Radio Trinbago on 3 different computers and they were all as bad as each other. Though I must say i95 had for the most part the best quality stream. Radio Trinbago was like listening on a cheap Radio Shack transistor radio and WACK what can I say as it was not about San Fernando appeared out of their depth.

I'm glad I'll be at the Savannah for the finals.
      • Randisc,
I'm in total agreement. I was so surprised though to hear a Trini pan musician like Raf admitting to not knowing too much about certain elements in the history of the various bands. So why are you there? Commentary on performances with comparisons to previous years is part of the trini lauvee when it comes to Panorama and dead air is not what we tuned in to hear. It's a shame that none of these people, while entertaining at times, were not as knowledgeable as one needs to be when you're in de big yard listening to heavy barrels. Hopefully the finals will bring out the big gun commentators. And by the way, don't knock the South too hard. It produced some serious pannists and pan jumbies as well :::)))
    • ...and how about this one Gospel...during Starlift's commentary I heard that they had won Panorama 'twice' ...tying with Solo Harmonites and again in 1978 with a tune arranged by Ray Holman...now I suppose the announcer was referring to Natasha in '78...but that was arranged by Herschel Puckerin...apparently the commentator didn't know about 'The Bull' in 1968 which makes it three times for Starlift
      • It is not my intention to embarrass, but get your info down correct if you are going to correct someone. Starlift won with The Bull in 1969, not 1968. The winner in 1968 was Solo Harmonites with The Wrecker.
        • you looking to cause confusion.
